Earth Hour, the grass-roots event that started in Sydney, Australia is now just a week away. More than 680 cities in 76 countries are already signed up to take part.

The program aims to encourage a billion people to turn off their lights, to raise awareness about global warming. The date has also become a focal point for friends and family who gather to enjoy a candle-lit evening together.

Research firm, Gartner estimates that the IT industry accounts for 2% of all carbon emissions. But this year technology is hoping to support positive change with updates available on Twitter, smartphone manufacturer Blackberry offering a special download and community forums abuzz with discussion.

Saturday 28th of March at 8:30pm -- no matter where you are -- it's time to turn off your computers, turn off your lights and appreciate the planet.
