The World Wildlife Fund recently released a study that envisioned a "smart world" in which IT policies and best practices such as teleworking would combine to save roughly one billion tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually by 2030. The report, sponsored by Microsoft, suggested that the savings could generate a reduction of up to 3.5 billion tons of CO2 by 2050. To achieve the "smart world" of the future, the report recommended policies to enable unified communications. For instance, it called for cities to include teleworking in their transport strategies and ensure that connectivity is possible from all relevant places. By partnering to support research like this, Microsoft is making good on its commitment to explore the ways in which technology can solve environmental challenges.
