March 07, 2011, 8:58 PM — Remember the good ol' days after the iPad's release, when users could sign up for an unlimited 3G data plan at $30 per month with no contract? Well, if you've been clutching tight to your unlimited plan ever since AT&T switched to its tiered model, then you're in luck: AT&T has confirmed that, when the iPad 2 arrives on Friday, the good times can keep on rollin'.
AT&T spokesperson Seth Bloom told Macworld that owners of an original iPad Wi-Fi + 3G who have held onto their unlimited data plans will be allowed to port said plans to an iPad 2. However, specific details on how these plans can be ported are not yet available. New iPad 2 owners may be able to just sign into their existing account on a new iPad 2, or AT&T might offer its new postpaid iPad data plan option to customers with existing wireless accounts. Apple's other carrier partner, Verizon, is currently offering unlimited data for its iPhone 4 plan, but will only offer tiered plans for the iPad 2. However, as you can see in our iPad 2 data plan comparison chart, new iPad 2 owners who haven't held onto their old unlimited plan and who need more than the 2GB of data in AT&T's most spacious plan might be able to save some money with Verizon.
