CES 2012 in a nutshell

As technology conferences go, CES this year reached new heights of stardom, with its own television show on Spike TV and big entertainment names like Justin Bieber, Justin Timberlake, Kelly Clarkson and Ryan Seacrest.

CES may have lacked a big bang from IT vendors, but there were plenty of new mobile devices on hand, including the buzziest of buzzwords: ultrabooks.

Ultrabooks are being marketed as the next generation of laptops. They are fairly inexpensive at less than $1,000, and among the models on display at CES were Lenovo ThinkPad, Samsung Series 5 and HP Folio 13. The ultrabooks are built for the traveling corporate worker who needs a powerful and durable machine. There were some show-goers who said they will wait for the price to come down and see what comes out when Windows 8 is released later this year.

The other hot topic at the show was what is next for mobile devices. Multi-core processors were touted by chip makers at the show but some questioned their value. Analysts noted that some mobile operating systems aren't designed to support dual-core processors. They said that unless you are a gamer, you won't see much benefit from such power in a phone.
