July 18, 2014, 1:05 PM — Dell's Chromebook 11 is so popular that the company has stopped selling it online. But don't despair. Here are some great alternative Chromebooks to consider.
HP Chromebook 11
The specs on this one are similar to the Dell: a Samsung Exynos 5250 Dual 1.7 GHz processor, 2 GB of RAM, and an 11.6-inch screen. You'll also get a 16 GB SSD hard drive. There's the usual assortment of ports, and a 6-hour battery life. At $199, it's affordable. And given that it's the third-best-selling laptop on Amazon, you'll be in good company if you buy it.
HP Chromebook 14
If you're in the market for a Chromebook with a larger screen, consider the HP Chromebook 14. As the name implies, it's got a 14-inch screen, and comes with 2 GB of RAM and a 16 GB drive. At $249 it's only $50 more than the HP Chromebook 11 for the extra screen real estate.
Acer C720 Chromebook
As I write, this is the best-selling Chromebook on Amazon. It's gotten stellar reviews from users, sports a 11.6-inch screen, and is powered by a 1.4 GHz Intel Celeron processor and 2 GB of RAM. Note that this is the older $199 Acer 720, because as you'll see in my next recommendation, there's a new version that's much more powerful, and also more expensive.
Acer C720-3871 Chromebook
This new model is a significant upgrade over the existing Acer C720. It runs the fourth-generation Intel Core i3-40005U Haswell processor at 1.7Ghz, so it's a true power machine. There's also an 11.6-inch screen with 1366 by 768 resolution, 2GB of RAM, and a 32 GB solid state hard drive. You'll pay extra for that more powerfuld processor, though. The machine costs $349.
Acer C720-3404 Chromebook
This is essentially the same machine as the C720-3871, with one major difference: It's got 4 GB of RAM instead of 2 GB, and goes for $379. I think that $30 is a reasonable price to pay for an additional 2GB, so if I were buying, this is the one I'd get.
