Review: 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro offers optimal choice for lightweight laptop users

    Posted October 28, 2012 - 8:45 pm

When Apple released the 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro (), it was only a matter of time before the Retina display made its way to other Apple laptops. That time is now, and with the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display, a compelling argument can be made that Apple’s newest laptop is a perfect combination of performance, portability, and features.

Touch Cover vs. Type Cover: Empirical test data doesn't lie!

    Posted October 27, 2012 - 7:55 am

If you're going to throw down some cash for Microsoft's new Surface RT tablet, you absolutely must get either the Touch Cover or the Type Cover along with it. Without one of these keyboard accessories, the tablet's greater productivity package isn't complete. But which keyboard cover offers the better value for the money? Which one actually performs better under the scrutiny of empirical testing?

Asus Vivo Tab RT has thoughtful design, but brings a mixed tablet experience

    Posted October 27, 2012 - 7:35 am

Asus comes to the Windows tablet party with a strong tablet pedigree, which is just one of many reasons I looked forward to seeing the Vivo Tab RT. The company already has shown a talent for innovative design with its Transformer Pad series of Android tablets. The Vivo Tab RT ($599 for a 32GB unit bundled with a keyboard dock; $699 for a 64GB model, also with a dock) handles many tasks well. But as a tablet—one of the first running Windows RT to reach my desk—it falls short of its Apple iPad and Google Android competition.

Mac Gems: QuickRes helps you get the most out of Retina displays

    Posted October 27, 2012 - 7:20 am

Apple’s 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro has a problem: OS X doesn’t allow users to easily take full advantage of the Retina display. Specifically, OS X doesn't provide a simple, quick way to switch between the many supported screen resolutions; in addition, the Retina display supports higher resolutions than OS X provides access to. Fortunately, several developers offer software tools to fix this problem, and the one I’ve come to favor is Inertiactive’s QuickRes.

Microsoft targets virtualization with Windows 8/Windows Server combo

    Posted October 24, 2012 - 2:57 pm

Much of the attention being paid to this week's Windows 8 launch focuses on the new Metro-style interface and the fact that Microsoft is extending its desktop OS to tablets and smartphones. But for enterprises, the real story is the way Microsoft has integrated Windows 8, Windows Server 2012 and the Hyper-V hypervisor to create an unmatched system for running virtualized environments.

The iPad mini doesn’t arrive in stores until November 2, but we got to spend some time with one on Tuesday after Apple’s media event at the California Theater in San Jose. Our conclusion: Yes, it’s a small iPad—but there’s more (and less) to it than that. Here are our hands-on impressions.

Review: iPod nano (7th generation) combines the best of its predecessors

    Posted October 20, 2012 - 7:42 am

Along with a new iPhone and a new iPod touch, September's Apple event brought with it a new iPod nano, the first in two years. (2011 saw a notable software update for the 2010 model, but no new hardware.) As has been the case with so many iPod nano models over the years, the iPod nano (7th generation) is a dramatic re-imagining of Apple's most-popular traditional iPod. But unlike the sixth-generation iPod nano, this one is mostly an improvement over its predecessor. In fact, for most uses, it just may be the best nano yet.

Dell Inspiron 15R 7520 review: Not so stylish, awesome screen, superb performance

    Posted October 20, 2012 - 7:40 am

In a world full of sleek and slim Ultrabooks, the Dell Inspiron 15R 7520 looks enormous. This 15.6-inch laptop is bulky, heavy (7.4 pounds), and not terribly stylish. But it does have some surprises under the hood--namely, four USB 3.0 ports, a full HD screen, and solid overall performance.

Toshiba Satellite R945-P440: Sturdy and so-so

    Posted October 20, 2012 - 7:35 am

The Toshiba Satellite R945-P440 is a solidly built 14-inch all-purpose laptop, but it looks positively monstrous next to the Ultrabooks and ultraportables on the market today. This 14-inch laptop measures a whopping 1.2 inches thick and weighs almost 5.2 pounds with accessories, which makes it sort of a drag to tote around. So the question is, why would you choose the Satellite R945-P440 over an Ultrabook, especially when you can pick up a sleek little number for about $100 more?

Our increasingly wireless lives are still dependent on physical connections. And that means cables--lots of cables. As the editor who does most of Macworld's accessory coverage, my office is overrun with cables, connectors, and chargers. Few warrant a full review or an article of their own, but that doesn't mean they should go unnoticed. Whether you're looking for worthy candidates for your travel bag or you just want to clean up your desk, here are some of the best accessories I've come across recently for connecting, charging, and more.

Sony Duo 11 Ultrabook review: Blurring the line between tablet and laptop

    Posted October 20, 2012 - 7:01 am

Unpacking the Sony Duo 11 (aka the SVD1123CXB) reveals what appears to be a tablet; no keyboard is immediately visible. Yet when you pick it up, it seems a little hefty for a tablet. What's going on here? Well, the Duo 11 is not just a tablet. Lifting up the top edge tilts the display and reveals a sliding keyboard hidden beneath the panel.
