Dispatch from the Google Fringe

More Google Fiber follies, seagull photobomb and more!

By Mike Elgan  Add a new comment

I've written about the absurd lengths some cities are willing to go to in order to attract Google, and its limited offer of laying down ultra-fast fiber networks. Sarasota Mayor Richard Clapp jumped into a tank full of sharks to gain attention for the city's bid. Fortunately, he wasn't eaten.

The City of Duluth even recruited Senator (and former comedian) Al Franken to promote its bid for Google fiber. It turns out that Franken once did a bit on TV as the "Duluth Answer Man," to promote the city, and old video of the bit was trotted out in a new YouTube video calling for Google to choose the city.

In other Google Fringe News, A seagull "photobombed" the Google Street View camera, and the picture ended up on Google Maps.

And finally, Google named its phone the "Nexus One" before being granted a trademark for the name. But now the Trademark office has finally responded to its request: Denied! What now, Google?
