Alternatives to Google Reader videos flood YouTube

Plus the obligatory "Hitler reacts" videos

Depending on whether you used it or not, the news that Google is shutting down its Google Reader service is either devastating or "meh". A quick scan of the office here for writers/editors that used the service to track the flood of information coming in almost hourly showed the same reactions - those who relied on it were scrambling for alternatives; those who didn't were non-plussed.

Still, it didn't take video creators very long to post their own reactions and videos. The most popular video at the moment is the classic "Hitler finds out . . ." meme, in this case, "Hitler finds out Google Reader is shutting down". It's NSFW for caption language, but if you've seen any of these videos before, you'll know the gist:

More important, videos are popping up offering alternatives to Google Reader - Here's a video by YouTuber "mobilephone2003" offering a quick take on some other sites. It's interesting to note that some of the alternatives were facing very heavy traffic due to the rush of people either importing feeds or checking out the site:

Ben Rimes, aka "Techsavvyed", has posted a more detailed how-to on getting your current Google Reader settings into a new Reader - if you've picked your alternative (or before you decide), this video shows you how to make sure you don't lose any of your feeds.

Here's the list of the top 3 alternatives that I've been able to discover, through other blog posts or suggestions from colleagues:

  • Feedly
  • The Old Reader
  • NewsBlur

Others: Taptu, Pulse, Flipboard (iOS/Android, no Web browser version), BazQux Reader, Rolio, Bloglovin, Netvibes.

Also, check out this crowdsourced list of Google Reader alternatives.

Feel free to add your own alternatives in the comments section below!
