My New Web Browser...Thank You, Google!

One tiny but important aspect of my day job is to review new and/or popular versions of web browsers to make sure my company's web-based applications function properly. So I downloaded the beta of Chrome today. After approximately 15 minutes of use, I made Chrome my default browser. It really is that good. I was astounded at how clean this app installed...no extraneous plugins immediately necessary...and how damned fast it is. Makes IE 7 look like it's just standing still. Kinda like the way Safari runs on a new iMac. No fuss. Just a powerful little app.

Next up is IE 8 beta 2. I've downloaded this beta and, while faster than IE7, it's no contender in compared to Chrome. The install was a long arduous process that had me reboot my computer (Chrome was downloaded and installed in 5 minutes, no reboot). One thing IE 8 does have are developer tools (idea taken from Firefox) that are truly nifty to have. So, I will be using IE8 for occasional development troubleshooting. Chrome does have developer tools, although not nearly as robust.

Is Chrome perfect? No, of course not. No product is. There are some sites and online apps that cause Chrome to hiccup. Sirius Satellite Radio's online player, for example, shatters. I wish I could tell Google developers this. Oh wait, I can! You have the option to report a bug, broken page, or anything you just don't like to the developers. Not just some automated MS-style, "what the heck did I just tell them" report, but you can actually type in the description of your problem, automatically send a screen shot (or not, your choice), and the url of the problem page.

Nicely done, Google. I haven't been this impressed with any computer app in a long time.

Yay... Chrome is stripped-down and no-nonsense. So is the iPhone's browser. Problem is, I don't use a desktop computer because I want minimalism; I use it because I want power.Chrome is a great contender as a smartphone browser. But I will stick with the "bloated" browsers like Safari and Firefox when I want to do real research.

Excellent browser; works very well with my company's flash-driven progams... it does not work with logmein and, i fear, a host of other ActiveX-based content. It is a good sign though when a beta browser beats a 'D'. Good job.

Fast? Sure... But I thought it was ridiculous how you can not install it to a desired directory. There was also no options to control how much and where temporary internet data is stored. Due to the lack of options, I promptly uninstalled it. Oh, and what is with running a google update process in the background? I'm sure the program itself should be able to check for updates for itself. I'm tired of applications that dump active processes in the background wasting memory and cpu time.

For privacy fanaticsIf you were to check the history of your browsing activities - stored locally - you would see the list of all the sites you had visited, stored by day. Chrome looks at this to present a list of your most visited sites. The same functionality exists in IE and Firefox, it is just that it is not presented front and center for you. :)

I hope they paid you for all that kissing up. If you're going to write a review, put more effort into it than "It installs fast and let's you send bug info to the developers". If you really haven't been impressed by a new app before trying this, you need to find some other line of work.

I was going to kiss up to you and your comments, but you haven't paid me enough...!

I like chrome too, I run osx on my machine so i was sad when there was no public beta for osx, but that didn't stop me from running it on my virtual windows machine, and it ran super fast. I have not previously found a windows browser that could compare to safarie for osx, even safari on windows floped, but chrome was a supercharged easy to use friendly experience and it ran amazingly fast.

Too bad there are no privacy controls...and it records everything you do. Just open a new tab and it will show you all of the pages that you go to. Yikes. Wonder what else it's tracking...or who it's sending it to?

Dude, I think this incognito is what you want.

You must not have actually installed it, or for that matter, must not have read anything about it.Chrome's incognito mode (aka pr0n mode) records nothing about what you do and you'll never see anything in the address bar or elsewhere that you typed or viewed while incognito.Go read an article about it or actually try the product before opening your trap next time.

Hmmm, guess what - ALL of the browsers are tracking where you've been - it's called HISTORY ...

Have you tried the Incognito tab?
