Palin's Yahoo mail hacked, published on Wikileaks

Hackers say they have gained access to U.S. vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin's Yahoo account and published some of its contents on the Wikileaks Web site.

On Wednesday, Wikileaks published several screen shots of Yahoo e-mail messages, e-mail addresses of Palin family members and associates, and other data that hackers claim to have obtained from Palin's private Yahoo account.

One e-mail message appears to be from Alaska Lieutenant Governor Sean Parnell, complaining to Palin about an interview by Alaska radio show host Dan Fagan. "Arghhh! He is so inconsistent and purposefully misleading," Palin apparently writes in response.

A hacking group known as Anonymous gained access to Palin's Yahoo account late Tuesday night and sent the information to Wikileaks, which acts as an anonymous clearinghouse for leaked documents.

"Governor Palin has come under criticism for using private e-mail accounts to conduct government business and in the process avoid transparency laws," Wikileaks wrote in a note accompanying the material. "The list of correspondence, together with the account name, appears to re-enforce the criticism."

Late Wednesday, the McCain-Palin campaign confirmed the hack. "This is a shocking invasion of the Governor's privacy and a violation of law," the campaign said in a statement. "The matter has been turned over to the appropriate authorities and we hope that anyone in possession of these emails will destroy them."

Palin's e-mail practices had been discussed in the press in the days before the hack, after Alaska activist Andree McLeod had sought to obtain more than 1,000 e-mail messages that Palin had withheld following a public records request.

Last week, the Washington Post reported that Palin routinely handled governor's business from the address gov.sarah@yahoo.com. However, that is not the account that Anonymous hacked. Screen shots of the Yahoo pages posted to Wikileaks show that they had access to a gov.palin@yahoo.com address.

Palin may have been using several Yahoo addresses in order to keep e-mail from friends and family separate from her other mail, said Adam O’Donnell, director of emerging technologies with e-mail security vendor Cloudmark.

There are several ways that attackers could have gained access to this account, O'Donnell said. They could have simply guessed her password, or had enough of her personal information to trick Yahoo into resetting the password. A more sophisticated attacker might have somehow installed key-logging software on Palin's computer or obtained the information though a phishing attack, he said.

Yahoo declined to comment on the matter, saying that it does not comment on specific user accounts for privacy reasons.

Made up of a loosely knit group of volunteer hackers, Anonymous gained notoriety earlier this year for launching an online attack against the Church of Scientology's Web site.

Palin is the governor of Alaska. She was named John McCain's vice-presidential running mate on Aug. 29.

Greg, that was a cheap shot. I don't remember how to not flip-flop, count houses and tie my shoes, because I was a POW. 9/11, 9/11, 9/11!! We need deregulation. LOW TAXES!! Sarah and I are like soul mates. We are the change we believe in, and you elitists should believe too. THE FINANCIAL SYSTEM IS SOUND, WHILE SOCIAL SECURITY IS DISGRACEFUL!! So, in summary: 9/11, low taxes and privatization.

Not only did the hacker violate Federal Law, so did Wikileaks as well. They knew when posting the material that it had been illegally obtained. Both will probably shortly face representatives of the Justice. Their equipment will also probably be siezed, if not as material used in a crime, at least as evidence. We have all seen images of Police come out of a house after serving a search warrant with the owner's computers in hand.SSL Certificates EV SSL Certificates Wildcard SSL Certificates

There seems to be a few misconceptions here. First some act like hackers(Black Hats) really care if what they do is illegal. Second some act like hackers don't communicate between each other. Finally there is the person who thinks this was all a sham.To answer: First Black Hat hackers have so called illegal websites all over the web typically hosted outside of the U.S. or any country with strong anti-hacking laws. These sites do include user names and passwords for both privte and business emails as well as private companies LAN and WAN sites.Second hackers of all levels communicate via the afore mentioned websites, online forums, and other means.Third only someone that has no clue would call something a sham when the evidence says other wise. Logic dictates truth and facts. Illogical statements usually gets one laughed at.

The fact that Sarah Palin was using a Yahoo! account is almost neglectable in light of the fact that Anonymous members were illegally cracking the email account and deliberately spread private and government information on the internet, on top of all endangering the safety of Palin's family. No "public interest" exists for this, and their doing was just plain illegal. Anonymous is known for illegal and harassing actions for a long time. Uh... it has been confirmed folks so all the personal attacks on the groups and Obama really makes no sense. She wants to claim transparency, but she is using personal email for government business. That is wrong. I can understand some of you have been charmed by her, but most of that charm came from a speech writer. If you look at her actual public speeches the RNC speech sounds NOTHING like her.She is on a stumble... along with McCain 24/7 Flip Flopper on a Dime. Being a POW at his rank does nothing to enhance his resume to be president. I'm sure there are some FORTRAN and COBOL programmers for years, but that doesn't make them ready to take the lead in the world of ASP.NET.Peace to you all!

Hey pinheads, your own web description; "Wikileaks - Wikileaks Publishes and comments on leaked documents alleging government and corporate misconduct."Nothing was leaked, Anonymous committed a crime. And what about Biden or Obambamaba? Nothing to disclose on them?Coneheads

Anonymous are cyber-cowards. You want my email to post a comment, how about their email addresses or better yet, their mother's? It's hoped someone in the group is punished for violating Gov Palin's personal email. By what authority does anonymous have for such an invasion of privacy? No butt-wipe, there's no benefits.Cleveland brown

"A hacking group known as Anonymous"And you print this because... someone said so?What this should say is:"An anonymous hacker"Assuming this has anything to do with hacking. More than likely they just guessed the password. A lot of people use really simple and easy to guess passwords.

Palin is so simple minded. How could anyone allow her to step foot in the white house, the home of our fore fathers whom fought with their lives and gained our respect from the freedoms they won for us before they were placed in office. What has she done for us, nothing. No one knows her but half of the US has stood behind her like sheep. She has made elementary mistakes left and right and it is just getting worse. i am so embarrassed right now to be an American.

My, my, my aren't we throwing around the word "terrorist" lightly these days? Maybe we should stop and attempt to define that word before utilizing it. Before jumping to any quick conclusions, stop and think about what these people do....these "hackers" are uncovering information that is desperately being attempted to be hidden (by people, governments, etc.) that is our right as citizens to be aware of (whether we like the contents or not). I suppose most of us wouldn't want our personal information leaked out to the world, but then again we aren't attempting to run the "most powerful country in the world". As a teacher, I thank them for the education. We should all be so lucky to have someone following up on the constitution and the true ideals of freedom of thought, speech, religion and knowledge of government and the myriad other freedoms we all take for granted and expect our government to just hand over to us. Maybe if more "secret" documents got out we wouldn't have to recall with horror the holocaust, Watergate, the Iran Contra Affair, Armenian genocide, the suffering in Darfur, etc., etc.

You are a teacher? So, tell me this. What part of the U.S. Constitution gives people the right to invade another citizens privacy? Yo claim that it is our right to know the private and personal information of ordinary U.S. citizens. Do you understand that the information this group posted was pictures and cell phone numbers of the Palin children? Of what use would having the cell phone of a child be other than perhaps to some stalker or pedophile who would love to get their hands on a child of someone in the public view. I am glad that my children are all grown so that I don't have to worry that perhaps you are their teacher.

How deplorable is this that "Anonymous" is using their power to hack into someone's PERSONAL email? It is plain wrong. They have done no good.
Anonymous 3 years ago in reply to Anonymous
You're a moron if you think Anon is actually a group of people, or at the very least, the same group of people at any given time. Someone did this and claimed to do it in Anon's name, that is all.
Anonymous 3 years ago
What a joke. A group that calls themselves anonymous! A group of power hungry propeller heads, that are at best mediocre, less than average, wannabe "A" types people--showing off their useless skills--but to afraid to say who they are!!
