How to use DNS Optimization for faster internet?

    Posted May 7, 2013 - 12:30 pm

I've heard about using DNS Optimization to speed up your internet connection, but how do you go about it? Do you just try a DNS server and maybe it will have a positive impact, but maybe it won't? I'd love to get faster download speeds for free, but I don't want to go through a blind trial and error process until I find a "good" DNS server.

Would you pay to subscribe to YouTube channels?

    Posted May 6, 2013 - 12:42 pm

It looks like YouTube is going to add fee based subscriptions to YouTube. While I definitely prefer the a la carte method to paying tons of money for cable that I mostly don't want, I'm starting to feel like I'm not saving very much over "cutting the cord" if every media source starts hitting me up for $10 or so each month.

What is a good bounce rate?

    Posted April 29, 2013 - 4:17 pm

I have a personal blog, and I would like for it to do reasonably well so that I could eventually make a few bucks from it (don't worry, I'm not going to post a spammy link to it in my question). One thing I'm uncertain of is what bounce rate I should be looking for. What bounce rate would be considered good/acceptable for a blog?

How will Google Penguin change SEO?

    Posted April 23, 2013 - 12:55 pm

I am helping develop content for a new company website, and apparently Google is updating it's algorithms again, which could affect SEO. Any word on what changes this Penguin update will bring? I'd rather not have to make too many revisions and changes almost as soon as I finish the content.
  • Question

Why is broadband access and speed in the US so bad compared to other countries?

    Posted April 10, 2013 - 3:15 pm

It looks like Austin is going to join Kansas City as a city with Google Fiber (really) high speed network. Good for them. Meanwhile, I live in a city with ~300,000 people in the metropolitan area, and even though I'm located about .25 miles from the center of town, my "high speed" option is to pay AT

    How to save Facebook data?

    Posted April 2, 2013 - 1:00 pm

I’ve decided to delete my Facebook account for a couple of reasons, but there are things on there that I would like to save. Is there a way to save my data on my computer before I delete it?

Why were people upset about Google's Cesar Chavez doodle?

    Posted April 1, 2013 - 10:57 am

I honestly thought I was reading an April fool's joke when I first saw an article the Google had "create[d] controversy with Cesar Chavez doodle." Of course, since that was on Fox News, I would have treated that as a joke any day of the year.

How to block inappropriate websites at home?

    Posted March 22, 2013 - 2:30 pm

How can I block inappropriate websites on my home network? I have a son who is 14, and surprise, surprise, he is going to websites that I don't approve of. I could tell him not to, but let's be real - he's a 14 year old boy. How can I block these types of sites?

How to find animated GIFs using Google Search?

    Posted March 20, 2013 - 3:57 pm

Google apparently made it easier to find animated GIFs (which I'm all for since I need to see many more images of cats, just like everyone else on the interwebs) but I can't figure out HOW you search for them. So, how do you actually search this treasure trove of time wasting, laugh inducing imagery?

Why won't links on some websites work with Chrome?

    Posted March 13, 2013 - 9:36 am

Recently, things like the internal links to news stories at Wired and the log-in here at IT World won't work with Chrome. I've had to switch over to Firefox to fully use both sites. This is also happening at some other websites too, although the majority of sites still work fine.
  • Question

What would you like to see changed in Facebook's News Feed?

    Posted March 7, 2013 - 12:13 pm

Facebook is once again about to change up things, whether you like it or not. Hopefully the changes they are about to announce for New Feed will be for the better. Of course, one man's better is another man's worse. What would you like to see changed?

How to access region locked streaming video?

  • Question

    How can I reduce latency?

    Posted February 28, 2013 - 3:25 pm

I have good connection speeds, but poor latency (244 when I pinged it a few seconds ago). Is there anything I can do on my end to reduce latency, or is it completely in the hands of my ISP? Thanks.
  • Question

How can I avoid the six strikes "Copyright Alert System"?

    Posted February 26, 2013 - 12:33 pm

How can I keep my ISP from sanctioning/throttling my home service? I use BitTorrent quite a bit, and most, if not all of my downloads are legit. There are quite a few musicians that are available for 100% authorized download - Counting Crows being perhaps the best known, but there are many, many others.
  • Question

Which internet providers are implementing the "six strike" policy?

    Posted February 25, 2013 - 2:21 pm

Is there a way to find out if your ISP is doing this? I'm not too happy at the thought of the ISP I pay for doing what the MPAA and RIAA demands, and my level of confidence that the "six strikes" policy will be fair and accurate is pretty low based on the competence I've seen from my ISP.
  • Question

Have you taken a break from Facebook?

    Posted February 20, 2013 - 2:40 pm

There was a report from Pew earlier this month that said 61% of Facebook users have taken a "voluntary break" from it. I found Facebook to be a double edged sword in some ways, but I've never actually made a conscious decision to "take a break." Have you ever done it, and if so, why?
  • Question

    How private is GMail?

    Posted February 13, 2013 - 1:53 pm

Microsoft has been pushing the Google = Scrooge thing in its latest ad campaign. Basically, MS says Google reads all of your emails, and you should switch to er, whatever it is they call Hotmail now. Ok, I get that MS wants everyone to use their services instead, but in reality, is there a lack of privacy if you use Gmail?
  • Question

How important is a site's PageRank?

    Posted February 4, 2013 - 1:52 pm

I was just checking our website's PageRank, mostly out of curiosity, and it got me started wondering, how much does PageRank matter? Does it make a significant difference to advertising revenue (which is not something that we really care about on our site)? Is it primarily for advertising purposes, or does it impact search results?
  • Question

How to limit posts on Google+ to the person you shared it with?

    Posted February 1, 2013 - 2:28 pm

I've had a couple of things that I would rather the person I shared them not reshare with their circles. Obviously, I know that you shouldn't share anything you really want to keep private on a social media network, and I never put anything on there that is really embarrassing or inappropriate.
  • Question

How can Yahoo improve Yahoo search?

    Posted January 29, 2013 - 1:25 pm

Yahoo's CEO Marissa Mayer identified improving Yahoo search as a key goal of the company while discussing 4Q earnings earlier this week. If I'm not mistaken, Yahoo doesn't even HAVE it's own search engine any longer, it just farms searches out to Bing.

I want to make sure our website doesn't get dinged by search engines for duplicate content. How do you use canonical links to prevent it (and are they effective at that)?
