  • Reminders: how to quickly schedule tasks on your Mac

    Posted January 19, 2013 - 8:05 am

I've written about--and even made videos about--the Reminders app before. While the app, built-in to both iOS and Mountain Lion, isn't as feature-rich as many third-party to-do list apps, I appreciate its simple iCloud syncing, Siri integration, and cross-device ubiquity.
  • Meet Flower Power, the gizmo that prevents a house-plant apocalypse

    Posted January 12, 2013 - 8:38 am

I buy house plants. I kill house plants. It's the circle of life, but these vicious cycles need not be predestined fate. At CES 2013, Parrot--the company best known for its iPhone-controlled quadricopters--gave us the first glimpse at Flower Power, a fork-like gadget that you stick in your plant's soil to monitor its most important vital signs.
  • Office for iOS may be coming, but does it really matter?

    Posted January 9, 2013 - 3:33 pm

Rumor has it that Microsoft is pushing Apple to lower its 30% App Store cut in order to make Office for iOS a reality. If that's true, I can't imagine that Apple's exactly rushing to satisfy Microsoft's demands.
  • Ubuntu, Firefox line up to take on iOS, Android in 2013

    Posted January 5, 2013 - 8:45 am

Android and iOS may be at the top of the heap in the smartphone world, but that hasn't stopped competitors, new and old, from trying to grab a piece of the pie. Ubuntu-maker Canonical announced Wednesday that it would enter the smartphone fray with its own Ubuntu phone OS based loosely on its popular Linux distribution for PCs. Research in Motion at the end of January will announce availability for BlackBerry 10, widely acknowledged as the company's last chance to retain any competitive advantage in the smartphone wars. Meanwhile, Microsoft is pushing Windows Phone 8, hoping that it unseats BlackBerry to become the third most popular smartphone OS behind Android and iOS. And the Mozilla Foundation also hopes to crack the smartphone world with a Web-based smartphone.

It's a common enough scenario. Your chock-full-of-files Mac is in the downstairs office. You're flat-backed on the couch upstairs with your iPad. There's a file on that Mac that you'd dearly love on your iPad but the idea of trudging downstairs to retrieve it makes you tired. What to do?
