  • As App Store banning continues, iPhone developers protest

    Posted September 15, 2008 - 4:49 pm

App banning: it's all the rage these days. Last week came news that Apple had refused entry to an application called Podcaster, because it "duplicates the functionality of the Podcast section of iTunes." Which is either extremely suspect or just someone at Apple not understanding the difference between what the app does and what the podcast section of iTunes does.
  • IPhone 2.1 jailbroken, unlock hack in circulation

    Posted September 15, 2008 - 2:05 pm

IPhone (and iPod touch) Software 2.1 has been unlocked by the iPhone Dev Team.
  • Consumer devices move to the business world

    Posted September 15, 2008 - 1:40 pm

I don't believe that the iPhone will ever become the dominant business smartphone, but there's little question that there's some substantial spillover happening as office workers bring their iPhones into the workplace, and even request them when it comes time for the boss to make a corporate purchase.

File storage and viewing apps for iPhone

    Posted September 4, 2008 - 11:52 am

Storing media like photos, music, and video on your iPhone is a snap: after all that's what the device was designed for. But when it comes to carrying around other types of documents, or files that aren't in your iTunes or iPhoto library, the iPhone falls woefully short. A trio of worthwhile programs have sprung up to fill this void, allowing you to store and view documents of your choice on the iPhone or iPod touch.
  • Why China Mobile isn't right for Apple and the iPhone

    Posted September 4, 2008 - 9:06 am

With no deal, no timetable and ultimately no pressure on either side to come to an agreement, there's a lot of room for speculation about Apple's discussions with China Mobile about bringing the iPhone to the world's largest mobile market. So here's my contribution: Apple is negotiating with the wrong potential partner for the iPhone in China.
  • Everything but the kitchen sink (and maybe that coming soon)

    Posted September 2, 2008 - 2:07 am

If engineers spent as much time learning to cook as they do trying to shoehorn their favorite gadgets into the kitchen, they'd probably be better off.
  • Apple promises September fix for iPhone security flaw

    Posted August 28, 2008 - 5:19 pm

A recently discovered security flaw that would allow access to a locked iPhone will be fixed next month, Apple said on Thursday.
  • New iPhone business apps: designing for usefulness

    Posted August 28, 2008 - 10:31 am

When Apple launched its new App Store earlier this summer, the assumption was that scads of businesses would develop applications for their iPhone-toting customers. Although there are more than 60 apps in the App Store's Business category, virtually no big-name companies have bothered to cough up one of their own. Since Apple plans to make at least 40 million iPhones in the next year, many of which will no doubt end up being used in the workplace, what's the holdup?
  • What to do with an old iPhone

    Posted August 27, 2008 - 3:48 pm

It's clear, you're an iPhone enthusiast. No, it's not the slightly smushed-in left-ear that indicates you spend hour after hour on the phone, the Apple sticker that adorns your forehead, or the unconscious typing motions you make with your thumbs. Rather, it's the two-layer bulge in your front pocket--created by your original iPhone and your new iPhone 3G.

    iPhone fantasy football draft tools

    Posted August 27, 2008 - 10:57 am

It seems like the iPhone could play a pivotal role in managing fantasy draft preparations. And indeed, with the pro football season and its attendant fantasy leagues kicking off next week, two programs available on the App Store offer to do just that. To some extent, they deliver, though you probably won't want to abandon pen and paper for this year's draft.
  • Locked iPhones can be unlocked without a password

    Posted August 27, 2008 - 10:23 am

Private information stored in Apple's iPhone and protected by a lock code can be accessed by anyone with just a few button presses.
  • A tale of two Tetrises

    Posted August 26, 2008 - 9:22 pm

Some sad news today from the world of iPhone software, as Noah Witherspoon, developer of the Tetris clone Tris, announced that he was pulling the game from the App Store due to legal threats from The Tetris Company, owner of the Tetris trademark.

Among Ecamm Networks' $20 PhoneView's many features (including using your iPhone as a storage device when connected to your Mac, copying the iPhone's music, videos, and photos to your computer; and viewing and editing the iPhone's notes) is that it allows you to export the phone's SMS messages as text files, which you can then print.

    Posted August 20, 2008 - 11:17 pm

Singapore Telecommunications (SingTel) will start sales of Apple's iPhone 3G handset at midnight tonight local time but users who buy the phones won't get support for visual voicemail or access to videos and music sold on the iTunes Store. "On launch, customers will not be able to buy content from the iTunes store. • Huge in Japan

Will the iPhone be the first Western gadget in a long time to win the hearts of the Japanese? Many (but not all) signs point to yes!
  • iPhone 3G reception kerfuffle: Carriers rage, Apple silently bides its time

Is your iPhone a lemon? Who's pointing fingers at whom? And will it be silently, magically fixed over the airwaves?
  • Second thoughts about iPhone 2.0?

    Posted August 15, 2008 - 11:16 am

I've had a colorful history with Apple's iPhone software updates. Back in the 1.x days, I was convinced that I would never upgrade my iPhone software--not while I could enjoy the best applications that my jailbroken phone could support. I softened my stance with the arrival of the iPhone 2.0 update and its introduction of the App Store and I've been generally thrilled with the third-party programs that I've installed, tested, and reviewed. But the bugs in iPhone software 2.0.x have soured me on the entire iPhone 2.0 experience.
  • Apple's iPhone to be sold in Best Buy

    Posted August 15, 2008 - 10:15 am

Apple's channel strategy has always been, well, pretty nonexistent. There is a network of Apple VARs, but the company has never been known for being channel-friendly. The iPhone sales strategy has followed the same philosophy, and until recently, you could only buy an iPhone at an Apple store or an AT&T outlet.
  • Troubleshooting iPhone and iPod touch issues

    Posted August 14, 2008 - 3:38 pm

Unlike OS X, the iPhone is a very closed environment from a user's perspective. When everything works--as it did for basically everyone using the first-generation iPhone with iPhone firmware version 1.x--that's good news. As a user, you don't really need to see the details when things are working well. Just plug in the iPhone, let it sync, and you're good to go. But what about when things aren't working well? As an example, say with iPhone firmware 2.0?

  • Vetting the App Store approval process

    Posted August 13, 2008 - 9:28 am

The App Store has been with us for a month now, and, by many measures, it's a roaring success. Still, that's not to say there that the App Store has achieved perfection in just 33 days of operation. There are plenty of areas for improvement, with the most pressing issues centering around the process in which iPhone applications win approval from Apple and wind up for sale at the App Store.
