    Now that the iPhone 3G is upon us, I thought it would be a good time to discuss the fact that an unlocked iPhone is probably best for everyone. Surely some are led to believe that Apple and AT&T would never want out of an exclusivity agreement because, well, if Apple really wanted out, it would have done it already. Based on that (poor) logic alone, some people are justifying the existence of this situation. But as for me, I don’t understand the logic and actually believe it’s a foolhardy notion with no basis in reality. Here’s why:

    Apple Computer's web site says that the new 3G iPhone will go on sale this Friday at 8am, and according to one observer, lines are already starting to form outside the New York City store.

    According to Apple, new shipments of iPhones will arrive most days, AT&T retail stores will also carry the smartphones, and users can check online as to availability at any particular outlet. Nonetheless, Apple advises that they are sold "first come, first serve," and advises iPhone fans to "arrive early to get in line."

    As I was considering what to write about today, I started looking around my office. Over in the corner, I noticed a cell phone that dates back at least five years. It features a backlit keyboard, address book, memory dialing, and a few other extras we thought were great back then. After that, I found the cell phone that replace it and realized that it was pretty much the same – it had a backlit keyboard, address book, and memory dialing – and even looked quite similar to the device I purchased a few years prior.
