Just last summer, the dearth of Android tablet apps comparable to the offerings available for the iPad posed a serious problem for Android tablets makers trying to compete with Apple's market juggernaut. But more recently, lots of outstanding tablet-optimized apps for Android have emerged--enough to make the task of selecting the best ones difficult because of the abundance of choices rather than the scarcity.

Fortunately, PCWorld Contributing Editor JR Raphael was up to the challenge. He identified 28 apps that will enhance your productivity with--and enjoyment of--your Android tablet. To make the results more accessible, he divided the apps into three productivity categories: reference, news and weather, and multimedia. Then he assembled three slide shows to provide a big-screen preview of how each app looks.

Productivity starts with reliable data and a solid grasp of the facts. To put essential information on your Android tablet, JR nominates such solid reference apps as iTriage Mobile Health, TripAdvisor, Analytix HD, IMDb Movies & TV, and of course Google Earth.

You'll find all nine of his recommendations at "The Best Android Tablet Apps for Reference."

To keep abreast of the latest political and meteorological developments, he recommends ten excellent apps with a news or weather focus, including Google Reader, Pulse News, Google Currents, and AccuWeather for Honeycomb.

Take a look at the contenders presented in "Best News and Weather Apps for Your Android Tablet."

JR's multimedia power set includes nine apps for video, music, podcasting, photo editing, and more. Among the highlights in this group are the Android tablet apps for Ustream, Google Music, Equalizer, SketchBook Pro, and Adobe Photoshop Touch.

To check out all nine, see "The Best Android Tablet Apps for Multimedia."
