September 26, 2013, 11:10 AM — When you've targeted the job you want, your aim is singular: Get your resume into the hiring manager's inbox. Your chances for an interview skyrocket once it's there, plain and simple.
But that's easier said than done depending upon how the screening process is handled at the company. Some use HR to vet resumes, while larger corporations use screening software. And, in the case of the latter, if your resume doesn't match enough of the required keywords, you could never make it off Jump Street, even if you're a great fit for the job. What to do?
Find a source in the company and determine who's handling resumes and how they're screened. If the hiring manager automatically receives all resumes, your work is done, fingers crossed for a phone call.
But if you discover that resumes are screened in some fashion and the hiring manager may not receive all inquires, then it's time to find out the name of the hiring manager and how to get in touch with him or her.
Again, this is where you ideally rely on a prized inside source and get a name. Or you might already have the name, but what if you can't get the all-important e-mail address?
Alexis Grant at The Daily Muse has advice for you.
First, she says, head to Google. Grant uses the example of Starbucks hiring manager Joe Schmo.
Grant says to try Googling:
"Joe Schmo email"
"Joe Schmo @gmail.com"
"Joe Schmo @Starbucks.com"
Or if you want to restrict your search to the site, try
"Joe Schmo site:http://www.starbucks.com."
