How to get your resume past applicant-filtering software

Straight from the source: Do's and Don'ts for an ATS-friendly resume

Many companies today are using applicant tracking systems (ATS) to handle the large volume of resumes they receive. If you haven't thought about how your resume would fare with an ATS, you need to start.

Screening software company HireRight reports that 95% of large corporations and 50% of mid-size companies are employing ATSs, which are helpful in that they save organizations time and money in finding the right candidate.

The systems can screen out approximately 75% of candidates for a job, HireRight notes. That's good news for an HR rep or hiring manager, but bad news for qualified applicants if their resume was shuffled out because it was not optimized for the screening software.

Here are some of HireRights' Dos and Don'ts when it comes to formatting your resume to make it "robot friendly":

Do:

  • Use keywords from the job description in your resume.
  • Put your contact information at the top of the page, but not in the header.
  • Use Web-standard fonts such as Arial, Tahoma or Verdana.

Don't use:

  • Abbreviations.
  • Tables.
  • Graphics or logos.
