I wasn't in the area of the country that suffered (or continues to suffer) power outages, but I have been through a couple of hurricanes in the past. Surprisingly, the longest I was ever without power wasn't because of a hurricane, it was because of an unexpected severe thunderstorm.

One of my coworkers claims that every printer puts an invisible but identifiable mark on each page it prints that identifies it as the specific printer as the source of the document, as well as the date that the document was printed. Is he pulling my leg, or is his tinfoil hat on a little too tightly?

How much are people willing to pay for a Microsoft Surface tablet? I just looked at the price and the lowest buy in is $499, going up to $699 for a 64GB Surface. I have been considering a new tablet for a while, and have been leaning towards a Nexus 7, but thought I would wait and check out the Surface before buying.

I've refilled my own ink cartridges and bought commercially refilled ones as well. I assume you are thinking of the commercially refilled ink jet cartridges for your office. I found no difference in reliability or longevity between the refills and new, expensive OEM cartridges.

I saw an article this morning that members of upper management frequently think that open source essentially means free, unsafe, second rate software.

jhotz asks How widespread on Facebook is the issue of private messages being publicly viewable on timelines? I've read about reported problems French Facebook users were having with their private messages unexpectedly showing up on their timelines. My private messages are private for a reason, I don't want everyone to see them. Is this problem limited to France, or is it a wider problem?32 weeks 2 days ago

It seems that I can count on starting my day the same way. Go to work, get my coffee, start my desktop, update for Flash from Adobe. It's like freakin' Groundhog Day, except without the love. Or the groundhog. Are there really that many critical flaws in Flash that it requires daily patches?

Ok, so I was pretty jazzed about a new Kindle Fire. I figured it would take the good from the first gen, take advantage of hardware improvements, both from a cost and performance standpoint, and provide a superior device for about the same money.

I don't know too many people that will miss Lexmark printers. Or their wretched printer drivers. Or their time bomb aka forced expiration, non-refillable cartridges. Well, maybe Dell will miss them a little since they rebadge them for resale.

It remains to be seen whether the court will issue the injunction against Samsung selling many of its products in the US, as Apple has requested. But if issued, that would only directly impact Samsung and those who desire a particular Samsung device in the near future.

We are looking at renting space in the old industrial area of town, which offers fantastic spaces with lots of character at low cost. The only downside is that the only option for internet access is through a microwave connection. I've never used a microwave connection, but the provider assures us that it will be great.

I've been trying to find a keyboard that has the same feel as the old IBM PCs from the 80s-90s. They had a long stroke and a very distinct "click-click" tactile feedback.

A SYN/ACK DoS attack that acts by rejecting ACK requests or a Ping DoS attack shouldn't be too difficult to defend against. You should be able to configure your network to react to the easily identifiable type of internet traffic that those attacks rely upon by filtering or limiting that traffic.

jhotz asks Do you think YouTube's change to real names on comments will make the commenters behave any better? One think that can be counted on in this world is things that are often horrible, sometimes racist, sometimes nationalists, and generally unpleasant to be posted in comments on YouTube. How much of a improvement in the amount of common decency shown in comments do you expect to result from the push to use actual names on YouTube?41 weeks 2 days ago

I won't. I feel like AT&T (and most other carriers) have excessive charges already. I'm all for a company making a reasonable profit, and recognize the need to improve infrastructure, but it seems like most of the carriers are already getting that much and more.

Well, she can't do worse than Yahoo's corporate "leadership" has recently. Then again, I could say that about myself.

We are about to start a website refresh for a portion of our business. One topic came up in our weekly meeting that I hadn't really thought of in a while, "Do we take dial-up users into consideration when designing the site?" I honestly don't know any dial up users, but they obviously still exist. Somewhere.

Well, the interface is going to be different, for sure, with the new "metro style" but beyond that, it looks like it will be a pretty major update. The file system you noted, Resilient File System in MS Speak, is supposed to be noticeably more scalable and reliable. Hyper-V will be able to work in multi-tenant configurations.

I know this is based on rumor, but work on the street is that Apple will bring out the new iPhone 4S with a larger display and a new iPad mini with a smaller display.
