  • When evaluating a data center’s efficiency, what is a realistic Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) number for a “green” data center?

  • If you want to go to the effort, you could combine Tails Linux distro with Tor. It will allow you to completely encrypt the files, emails, and IMs, as well as automatically for all internet traffic onto the Tor network.

  • It’s unlikely that you will notice any difference. However, extended support does mean that Microsoft will end non-security hotfix support for commercial users, unless you purchase an agreement within 90 days of the end of mainstream support. Also warranty claims and no-charge incident reports will be lost.

  • How can I try a preview version of the upcoming version L of Android?

  • I see that there is another streaming media device for the living room coming out. I already have a Chromecast, and while I am satisfied with it, to be honest I rarely use it except to stream music when I’m working from home.

  • Quarterly testing should generally be sufficient. It should be actual load testing though, and not just a quick start up, shut down, mark it done test. It takes money and time to perform load testing, and some places cut corners.

  • It does seem counterintuitive, but it has been proven to work. The term “hot water” really means “hotter water” because it isn’t run through chillers (or at least the chillers run less often). There isn’t a single design that all hot water cooling systems use at this point, but rather a few different concepts.

  • It’s when someone tries to prevent something from becoming public but because of their heavy-handed attempts at censorship, that thing actually becomes widely publicized. It’s called the “Streisand effect” because a photographer documenting coastal erosion took an aerial photo that included Barbara Streisand’s mansion.

  • I asked a friend of mine who works at the local university. He said they use Sakai (LINK) for class scheduling and student communication, but he wasn’t sure about Google Calendar integration. Also, it runs on servers, I’m not sure if there is a cloud version.

  • First of all, you will need Eclipse IDE. Then you will need (1) ADT Plugin, and (2) Android SDK. Obviously you will need some hardware, but nothing exotic - A decent Windows or Linux PC will do. Beyond that it is putting ideas and pieces together.

  • There are a variety of pundit’s predictions on exactly what this departure will mean, ranging from “Google+ is dead” to viewing this as a more realistic application of resources by the company. Keep in mind, not only is Gundotra departing from the Google+ project, up to a thousand other employees are faced with their jobs being shuffled about.

  • Physical location. If you are a company located in the US, make sure that your cloud provider’s servers are also physically located in the US. Latency approximately doubles if the network traffic is transatlantic. After all, the speed of light might be fast, but it still only travels so quickly.

  • I was told today that Google was opening up the explorer program (the oddly clubbish name for people allowed to buy Google Glass) to everyone. I have to admit, I’m intrigued. Despite the mixed reaction to Glass, I think it could eventually be an important product. I’m not sure I am ready to spend $1500 to find out….but I might be.

  • I saw a headline today that the FCC is opening up additional wireless spectrum. Will this have any impact on the average consumer or business?

  • They used to call it “page faults.” It’s not really an error. Software has requested an address and the page where it resides isn’t still in main memory. Usually it has been swapped to virtual memory, (hard drive or SSD) and the OS will swap it back from virtual memory to physical memory.

  • At a meeting today, we were talking about developing a more mobile friendly website to reflect the way people are actually accessing websites today. There were I thought were some good suggestions, such as eliminating remaining Flash content.

  • If I switch from a conventional telephone system to VoIP, will there still be additional charges for long distance calls, or is that different with VoIP because the call is going over the internet instead of a telephone exchange?

  • We have two offices that need to videoconference about once a week, and limited needs beyond that although occasionally something does come up. We need something that has better audio and video quality than some kid skyping with his buddies, which, I have to say, is exactly where we are now - skype, off the shelf webcam and mics.

  • I don’t believe this is a significant shift away from Android for Samsung. They have made no secret that they have been developing Tizen for some time now, yet there appears to be a strong ongoing relationship with Google.

  • This setting only has an effect while watching a DVD (or a BR disc I suppose). Mosquito noise reduction was created for digital TV recordings, and helps reduce flicker that is generally caused by compression artifacts, but I think it is inevitable that it will blur the image slightly.

  • This is a fairly widespread issue. As you noted, you can restart to “fix” it. Another way to deal with it is to force quit. Here are step by step instructions from osxdaily.com:

  • When establishing a VPN, is one of these pretty much always the better choice, or are there variables that make it situation dependent?

  • It’s less database intensive to check the CAPTCHA than it is to check user login/account information. By having CAPTCHA checked first, if it is not correct, there is no need to go forward with the rest of the login operation.

  • I wouldn’t say that it is absolutely necessary to have both, both doing so adds another level of security. One of the main advantages of a hardware (router) firewall is that it is isolated from software on your PC. This becomes important if that PC becomes infected with malware, some of which can disable the software (PC) firewall.

  • I don’t know of anything that is quite as useful as Keyword Tool, but there are a few free alternatives that may help fill in the gap, especially if used in combination:   Bing Keyword Tool Ubersuggest
