  • Commented on Can Newegg survive the post-PC future?

Once again the prediction that desktop PC's are going a way. The issue is everytime there is a prediction of this sort no evidence is ever provided. Mr. Kevin Purdy just falls along those same lines. Newegg go a way? Yeah right. Mr. Purdy is just going on the same illusions that every other tech writer has in the 2+ decades I have been around computers. Mr. Purdy please go back and look at all the evidence you will find you world is heading in the wrong direction from the rest of us.

  • Commented on 30 ridiculously dumb tech warning labels

#3 is a actually a good idea sorry but there is evidence that 3d projections can trigger Migrains, Seizures, and a few other issues revolving around the neuro system. As far as the rest... The human race has a history of being stupid when it comes to using any sort of product. And yes that includes putting a pet in the microwave to dry it.

  • Commented on Microsoft Security Essentials struggles in antivirus tests

What is missing is how many false positives came up in the test. AVG has a history of false positive results which in my experience causes users to ignore the warnings in the long run. AV-Test once again fails in their results because of this missing crucial information.

  • Commented on Patent verdict no reason to worry about Linux

First and foremost I doubt you would have found one person on the jury that had a clue in how routers, switches, firewalls or any other network appliance actually works. In this you now have a lack of logic and therefore easy targets for a lawyer that is seeing dollar signs. If you found one IT professional on most juries concerning patents then the lawyer for the plantiff did not do his job properly. The Bedrock Jury was rigged by the platiff attorney by rejecting anyone he felt would swing the verdict away from the verdict he wanted. With that said it now goes to the appeals court where the judges will determine the actual out come. Most likey it will be upheld and move on to the full appealate. Although I would prefer it be reversed, logically we want this to make its way to the Supreme Court to have a another ruling against our flaw patent system. As with the Microsoft suit that was also in the Eastern District for Texas, I feel the Supreme Court will actually make the right choice in the end.

  • Commented on Adobe vs. Apple: And The Winner Is...

Do not confuse the author with facts his mind is already made up. Actually even if this is partially true the real losers in this "War" is the consumer. Until the fanboys learn that Apple is not the god of the computer or mobile war this is just going to keep going.

  • Commented on Google wins injunction against agency using Microsoft cloud

NO SOFTWARE LICENCE FEEsThis may be partially true, however in the Enterprise sector there are always some sort of fee involved with Software. Whether it be Licensing Fees or so called support fees there is a fee, and in many cases the so called support fee can be more expensive in the long run then the Licensing Fees which typically include support. Secondly FOSS does not mean no cost software. FOSS and the license that surrond it just mean you are free to modify the software to your needs. All versions of the GPL license simply state the the source code must be made available to everyone with any changes made to the code. No where does it say a vendor can not charge something for there work. Third the Open Source Community has definately done some good work over the years, but simply put there are too many open source projects and not enough developers to bring these projects to the Enterprise leve. RHEL and SUSE are two of the few Operating Systems I would even consider Enterprise ready and both charge a per user fee for support which has to be renewed every one to two years. Fedora may be a good substitute for RHEL, but it does not come with support besides the developer base and a few others in the community. Finally Enterprises are looking for stable platforms to run on and besides the two mentioned above, most distributions have a release cycle of around 6 months which does not look good to the people making the decisions. As another reply stated work in a large Enterprise IT shop then make comments like this. Quite honestly most large IT shops are mixed shops running both FOSS and Comercial Applications. Many print servers run off of Unix while Web Servers run of Apache and Domain Controllers are on Windows Server.

  • Commented on 12 commands every Linux newbie should learn

Sudo only gives basic root access mainly for installation and if memory serves me correctly only works with certain distros of Linux. For RHEL and Fedora su~ gets root privledges which are needed for configuration. Only suggest doing this if you want to experiment like a good portion of newbies tend to do.

Nice pretty eye candy even some what functional, but did I mention I Hate Sidebars. They take up more screen real estate then standard task bar and get in the way most of the time.

  • Commented on Attachmate may keep 882 Unix patents, not Microsoft

Attachmate is a privately owned company there fore we have no way of knowing how much they actually have in capital. They do not have to report earnings to the SEC.

  • Commented on A Schizophrenic Look at Microsoft, Novell, and Patents

"The Novell patent grab is just another in a long line of actions that proves Microsoft looking out for the one thing it really cares about: Microsoft."Brian this is probably the one line that really needs commenting. Yes Microsoft cares about Microsoft, reason being, is that the share holders in Microsoft expect nothing less. In any publicly traded company the company is put before any other or the share holders get angry and start form lynch mobs. When it comes to Ballmer, it probably isn't a bad idea.Schizophrenic? MPD maybe but far from Schizophrenic. Sorry heard to many stories about this from my mother who was a Chapalin in the mental ward at the VA Hospital here.

  • Commented on ITworld review: Fedora 14 is leading-edge Linux

Nice article despite some of the points made by others. However one thing can be said about Fedora, it has never really been for the faint at heart or average home computer user. This is the distro my instructor in Linux OS and Administration chose to instruct with. If knowledgable people can break the OS just by changing configurations to set up certain server abilities aka(Samba) then the average home pc user has no business being anywhere near root which you have to be in to install just about any thing. However as a server and test bed for RHEL it ROCKS! As a server running Apache it is even better. Send Mail I am still a little on the fence about to easy for a entry level admin to break so to speak.

  • Commented on Reports of Linux’s Desktop Death Are Premature

Ms. Noyes please provide sources besides Linux Foundation for your statements.Simple fact of the matter. Windows still dominates the Desktop Market, Apple comes in a distant second even after gaining some ground during the Vista fiasco. Fact Linux/Apache is the best web server out.Fact Linux really does nothing besides rely on word of mouth for adoption. That and people like you that can only trash other systems.Fact Until someone actually gets the idea to run a full marketing campaign Linux even with Ubuntu will remain where it is in the desktop market. Finally you like to bring up the server side as evidence in a desktop discussion. This to me proves you have no clue about what you are actually wanting to say besides defend something that does not need and actually can't be defended. What it comes down to is marketing which no one in the Linux community really does. You want Linux to beat out Windows or Mac OS? Marketing is the key pure and simple.

  • Commented on ITworld review: Ubuntu 10.10 scores close to a ten

Article, beside the usual jibe at Windows you seem to always need. Unless 10.10 has figured out a new boot sequence the diffence in boot speed runs about the same between Windows 7 and Linux Ubuntu or Fedora. So this arguement does not jive. Yes I have booted all three without issue so please give it a rest.Secondly, once the a new or more to the point upgraded Linux Kernal reaches a stable release, unless a user does something ignorant outside of testing it to make it crash. I as of yet have seen it crash. I have done things to make it crash, but that is part of my job. Finally, flash is a resource hog there fore I agree with not including it as a default option. This of course is my opinion except the boot speeds. Sorry testing shows different.

  • Commented on The Smell of Microsoft Desperation

Usually your articles are well written, but in this case you are very far off the mark. What one person states to the press in Brazil does not make it what the company thinks or what the position is. Personally I am still in a wait and see mode on Microsoft and and the open source community. With that said, how about we all take a step back and see what happens. As has been stated by others both sides of this debate benefits from each other. How many open source projects have had parts of it make it into proprietary software? And the opposite side of the fence. How many ideas from the proprietary side has made it into open source projects? The arguement has actually gotten quite borish. Neither side is right or wrong on this issue as there is no right and wrong. Microsoft is serving a purpose just like Red Hat/Fedora and Ubuntu. Instead of writing about what one man says how about helping find ways to bring this arguement to an end.Innovations and creative thinking comes from both competition and partnerships. My life and a bunch of administrators we get a lot easier if the various factions would just look at that one piece of logic instead of arguing one which side is right or wrong.

  • Commented on Fact or Fiction? Top 8 Linux Myths Debunked

Responses to 1,2,6,81. Neither side can claim to be easier to install these days thanks to advances by the Linux community and Ubuntu especially. Simple truth on this one.2. Although Linux has gotten easier over the years there are still quite a few instances with a average user has issue with Linux especially installing new software. 6. More secure? Not really less attacked is more like it. Simple numbers come down to this, if the army of hackers that are looking for exploits in Windows were to turn their attention to Linux do you really think they wouldn't find flaws in the OS that can be exploited? If so please climb back under your rock.8. Studies coming out of Havard, Stanford, MIT and other have shown that TCO runs pretty equivalent for both systems. Windows server software cost more in the short term however the cost of configurations is reduced. Linux server platforms for the Enterprise or any company wanting support is cheaper, however you still have to longer configurations. GUIs do ablsolutely no good with a Linux server platform since they are typically not installed to save on resources.Ms. Noyes I really do wish you had an actually clue, but since you have shown that you are nothing more then a Linux Fan trying to look like a writer you obviously don't. Basic truths are this use the correct tool for the job at hand. Linux and Windows and even Mac OS have their place in the world. I use both in order to keep my skills up what about you?

  • Commented on Why Linux Should Never Win

The numbers do not agree with this statement. Linux/Apache holds the edge in Web Servers, Micorsoft still holds the edge in Enterprise Servers. Microsoft Sql and Oracle are still slugging it out with MySql trying to put its gloves in the fight.Desktop? Give me a break Windows slight decline means ablsolutely nothing. Linux 1% basically boils down to a single ant in a colony. I have said this too many times in the past. Until there is one single brand with the Linux operating system it is doomed to failure. The bee hive mentality that goes on with Linux and the different distros keeps it from ever maturing to what it should be. Smaller is better, however smaller with how many distros? Makes for chaos.Linux developers need to concentrate on one thing, putting out a single brand that is both user friendly and extremely marketable to both the FOSS folks and the developers that actully do this to support their family. Which by the way Money will always win out in the end.

  • Commented on What does Paul Allen think he's doing!?

Pretty close to what I was thinking. One of two reasons came to mind. The first being highly unlikely is he has completely lost his mind. The second is by doing this he is attempting to show Oracle just how idiotic they are being with the suits against Google. This in my opinion is the most likely cause of the insanity coming from Mr. Allen. Finally, we all know the Patent system is broken, probably beyond repair, however you have to get congress to get their heads out of the sand before anything will be done.

  • Commented on Of course Android can be hacked, so what else is new?

Just out of curiosity which planet do you live on? Give a hacker sometime in he/she will find an attack vector on an OS. Specifications are just a set of instructions. They are not a full security plan on preventing intrusions. As sjvn every OS can be hacked. It only takes time.

  • Commented on Is Facebook finally getting a real 'delete' key?

Block the I.P. Address at the router. Child no longer has access to the Facebook. Schools should already be blocking facebook, myspace and others. If said 14 year old has cell phone, then some one has more money than brains. Of course children with parents in IT are at a disadvantage when it comes to sites not allowed to visit.

  • Commented on Why location privacy is important

There is no defense for Apple or anyone else that requires you to devulge any information you do not wish to, and this includes Apple. Legally speaking congress really doesn't have to do anything. The laws are already their and EULA that try to subvert this by requiring you to agree to it before you can use their product are not sustainable. You people want to let others collect all this data go a head. Just don't be suprised when someone manages to steal and decrypt the signal. If you don't think that is coming then your nieve and ignorant.
