iPad now an enterprise favorite, says Good Technology

Apple tablet being activated by enterprises more than Android smartphones

Enterprises apparently can't get enough of Apple's iPad tablet.

Good Technology, a provider of mobile-management software for enterprises, on Thursday reported that in the second quarter, for the first time ever, more iPads were activated by its clients than Android smartphones.

According to Good's Q2 data, iOS tablets -- including the iPad and iPad 2 -- accounted for 27.2 percent of total activations, versus 24 percent for Android smartphones.

The most-activated device remains Apple's iPhone, which accounted for nearly half of all activations and 66 percent of total smartphone activations, twice that of Androids.

In the tablet category, it wasn't even close. The iPads accounted for 95 percent of all tablets activated by Good's clients, with Androids at 3.1 percent.

Combined, the iOS devices totaled 75 percent of activations, with Androids at 25 percent.

Good also broke out the data by business sectors, showing that 40 percent of all mobile devices were activated by financial services companies, followed by business and professional services at 17 percent.

What about BlackBerry activations? Good doesn't know, since Research in Motion devices use the BlackBerry Enterprise Server. Same with Windows Phone 7; Good doesn't support it yet, but intends to by the fourth quarter (along with HP's WebOS).

In a statement accompanying the report's release, John Herrema, senior vice president of corporate strategy at Good, said, "While Android may be gaining smartphone market share with consumers, our business users are clearly gravitating to the iPad and doing so in large numbers."
