My holiday tech wish list... for 1982

Need to get a gift for a 40-something geek? How about one of 1982’s newest tech gadgets?

NASA

2. GRiD Compass laptop computer

Original price in 1982: $8,150 (price in today’s dollars: $18,694)

Buy it now on eBay (the 1109 model) for: $699.99

If you have a few more bucks to spend and the Commodore 64’s 1 MHz CPU and 64kB of RAM/20 kB of ROM isn’t enough power for you, how about going for one of the world’s first laptop computers? Heck, if it was good enough for the military and NASA, why not you? In addition to its 340kB of Bubble memory, it also had an internal 1200 baud modem, an Intel 8086 processor, and a 320×240-pixel display (sorry, no Retina Display). Who needs a MacBook Pro, anyway?
