March 11, 2013, 6:17 PM — Since our purpose here is to highlight the use of mobility in enterprises, we're not surprised when we see surveys proving our premise: That mobility has shifted from a nice-to-have feature to a prime driver of innovation. Those smartphones and tablets that have become such a close part of our personal lives are bonding into businesses too, creating all kinds of new opportunities as well as new challenges for those in charge of making them work.
Two recent surveys conducted by vendors in the industry helped bring some numerical perspective to this trend. On the enterprise side, a study by Symantec found that most innovative businesses are making mobility a priority, with big majorities talking about things like line of business mobile apps and enterprise app stores, topics we'll be covering here regularly.
Why is mobile making such big inroads professionally? Most likely because for many of us, mobile devices have become so big a part of our personal lives that we can't and won't put them down when it's time to go to work. I enjoyed digging through the findings of a survey conducted by Wakefield Research for Citrix, a study of 1,000 smartphone users that concluded most of us don't go far from our digital companions.
"These survey findings confirm suspicions that most of us are rendered completely helpless when separated from our mobile devices, perhaps even more than when we are pulled apart from our best friends," said Mick Hollison, vice president for Integrated Solutions and Strategy at Citrix. While you can debate whether or not such devotion is healthy for us as a society, there's no denying its existence and the effects it is having both on personal and business lives.
