May 02, 2013, 6:34 PM — After a long, successful career in IT you finally find yourself in the CIO role... and nobody likes you.
That's my takeaway from reports like this one from the Harvard Business Review, which says a recent survey shows that almost half the CEOs they talked to view their CIOs negatively. The summary paragraph says it all:
"A simple summary of the work suggests that CEOs believe that CIOs are not in sync with the new issues CEOs are facing, CIOs do not understand where the business needs to go, and CIOs do not have a strategy, in terms of opportunities to be pursued or challenges to be addressed in support of the business."
Ouch! Then it seems like a day doesn't go by without some conference panel weighing in on what the CIO's role should change to -- or how CIOs need to all of a sudden pick up marketing skills, because, you know, the CMO is going to drive the business.
What's a CIO to do? My suggestion: Go big on mobile, and on cloud. Those areas are still developing from a technology standpoint, so expertise and smarts in "making things work" is still of high value. And there's some strategic high ground to claim here as well, by paying attention to details like security and data integrity that sometimes get passed over by the "just do it" crowd. Maybe that will get the CEO to start liking you again.
