Battle of the Android heavyweights: Which wins, the HTC One or the Samsung Galaxy S5?

Which of the two best Android phone you can buy should you opt for?

By

The HTC One and the Samsung Galaxy S5 are clearly the best Android phones you can buy today. Which is best for you?

Screen

The Samsung Galaxy S5 has a slightly larger screen, at 5.1 inches, compared to the HTC One's 5 inches. Will that make the slightest bit of difference? No. As to performance, though, the S5 gets the edge, at least according to DisplayMate, which rates it has having the best smartphone display they've tested.

Processor, RAM, and storage

The Samsung Galaxy S5 gets a very slight edge here. Both are powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 chipset, but the Galaxy S5 runs at 2.5 Ghz, while the HTC One runs at 2.3 Ghz. As a practical matter, will that make a difference in your everyday use? Likely not. But it's nice to have the tiniest little speed bump, just in case. They've both got 2 GB of RAM, and internal storage of up to 32 GBm and a microSD slot that can hold cards with up to 128 GB of storage.

Software and extras

The S5 has Samsung's TouchWiz layered over Android, and past versions of TouchWiz have been intrusive and at times annoying. Not so with this latest iteration. TouchWiz has a much lighter touch than in the past, and allows Android to shine through more. Similarly, the HTC One has a less intrusive interface than previous versions of the phone.

When it comes to extras and software beyond that, though the S5 stands out. Its Finger Scanner features not only provides security for unlocking your phone, it also lets you pay using PayPal with your phone in a secure way. There's a lot more as well, including a heart-rate monitor, and a slew of nice built-in apps.

The HTC One has none of that. But it does have an excellent speakers, for anyone who wants to listen to music without headphones or external speaker.

I'd give the nod to the S5 here -- its extras are much more useful.

Camera

If you care about your smartphone camera, you'll want the Galaxy S5. It's got a 16-megapixel camera that's impressive not just for its specs, but the quality of its photos, and it clearly beats the HTC One's. The S5's software for the camera is better as well.

Bottom line

Overall, I'd give the S5 a slight edge over the HTC One. Its hardware specs are just the slightest bit better, it has better software, more extras, and a superior camera. It's also got a superior display If you care a great deal about your smartphone's speakers, though, you may want to opt for the HTC One. But aside from that, I'd choose the Galaxy S5.
