Mobile & Wireless Question

  • Question

Does it matter if the iPad has a gap between the lcd and glass?

    Posted May 7, 2013 - 2:03 pm

I've read that there is a slight space, or "air gap" between the lcd and glass that make up the display on iPads. Presumably, this gap causes two images that the eye must see at the same time and merge into one. Theoretically, this can cause unnecessary eye strain.

What's the earliest version of Android that's still usable?

    Posted May 7, 2013 - 1:21 pm

What is the oldest Android release that you can actually still use and have a functional Android smartphone? I was looking for a cheap, no-contract phone, and I see some new phones for sale that are still running Android 2.2 and 2.3.
  • Question

What download speeds will WiMAX support?

    Posted May 2, 2013 - 1:39 pm

I was thinking of switching my carrier, and Sprint has the cheapest plan that would meet my needs. However, I'm in a WiMAX coverage area, and I'm a little worried about network speeds and reliability. I was hoping that someone who has used WiMAX could give me an idea of how fast (slow?) it is in actual use.
  • Question

How to restrict use of smartphone?

    Posted May 1, 2013 - 12:54 pm

I know the, "tell him not to use it then" advice, but teenagers being teenagers, that simply isn't realistic, and he needs to be able to reach us because of his participation in many after school activities, so taking it away isn't a good choice either.
  • Question

How useful is Facebook Home on Android phones?

    Posted April 22, 2013 - 12:41 pm

There was a ton of chatter about the "Facebook Phone" which turned out merely to be a skin/launcher (at least that's how I understand it). Is it actually worth installing if you are a Facebook user?
  • Question

How can I reduce RAM use in my E16i

    Posted April 17, 2013 - 2:28 am

My phone is SE E16i,and I flash a 2.3rom named Semc Debrand Engine, a replacement rom for Sony Ericsson Android phone . However, because the ram of E16i is very small, and the apps may be heavy for e16i, so the ramusage is always up to 80%, is there any way to improve the performance of e16i? and I don't want to use 2.1rom which is out-of-date.
  • Question

How to sideload applications on a Windows Phone?

Can I install apps directly from an SD card on a Windows Phone?
  • Question

Will T-Mobile's move away from cellular contracts change the industry's business model?

    Posted April 12, 2013 - 1:19 pm

I was watching some YouTube at home last night and every other video had a 15 second T-Mobile ad telling me that they had rejected the traditional contract based business model. If I had to list things I hear people complaining about, their cell contracts would definitely make the Top 10 List.
  • Question

How can I recover my contacts on an iPhone?

    Posted April 8, 2013 - 2:51 pm

All of my contacts on my iPhone just vanished for no apparent reason. I've never had this happen before. What can I do to get my contacts back?
  • Question

How often should Apple release a new iPhone?

    Posted April 3, 2013 - 12:21 pm

Smartphone technology and specs are moving so rapidly, that I wonder if Apple's product cycle is too slow. A year ago a 1Ghz single core CPU would have been a bland, middle of the road device, now it is a creaky old thing ready for retirement.
  • Question

How to stop an Android phone from downloading Gmail attachments every time I connect to WiFi?

    Posted April 2, 2013 - 12:52 pm

How can I stop Gmail from starting downloads of attachments? A lot of times, I connect to Wi-Fi for a couple of minutes to check or download something, and when Gmail starts downloading attachments it slows things down, sometimes a lot. Any way to change this? My phone is a Kyocera with Andoid 4.0, incidentially.

  • Question

How can I use a smartphone without a carrier contact?

    Posted March 26, 2013 - 12:18 pm

I feel like my carrier is ripping me off, and every month I have to pay nearly $100 for what I consider a pretty basic plan. I was complaining about it at work, and a co-worker suggested just use my Android smartphone without a plan at all. After my contract is up, I might try it, but how realistic is this plan?

What special tools (if any) are needed to take apart an iPhone 4?

    Posted March 11, 2013 - 1:51 pm

Are there any special tools required to disassemble an iPhone 4? I'm broke my screen into approximately 10,000 pieces, and I think I'll give fixing it myself a try.
  • Question

How to save a quick note to myself on an Android phone?

    Posted March 8, 2013 - 5:58 pm

I use Evernote for making lists, clipping things, etc., but it is overkill for a quick reminder to go by the bank or whatnot, plus I have to remember to check it.
  • Question

How to legally get a smartphone unlocked?

    Posted March 7, 2013 - 1:18 pm

From what I understand the decision by the Librarian of Congress to make unlocking smartphones illegal doesn't actually mean that there aren't ways to still get them unlocked (legally). How do you go about unlocking them without breaking the law?
  • Question

How to delete unwanted apps on an iPad?

    Posted March 1, 2013 - 5:03 pm

I use an Android phone, and one of the first things I always do when I get a new one is root it and remove all of the "bloatware" that the manufacturer and/or carrier installs. I got an iPad recently, and I would like to get rid of the pre-installed apps I will never use. I assume I will need to jailbreak it, but what do I do after that?
  • Question

What happened to all my Kindle books on my iPad?

    Posted February 28, 2013 - 2:00 pm

I updated the Kindle app earlier this week, and when I was getting ready to do a little bedtime reading last night all of my books were gone, my bookmarks were erased, and the settings were changed! What's going on, was Amazon hacked, was I hacked, or was the update corrupted? Any ideas on what happened?
  • Question

  • Question

How much can you overclock an Android CPU?

    Posted February 19, 2013 - 12:48 pm

I've rooted my first Android phone, and the two main things I want to do are (1) flash a new ROM, and (2) overclock it. Obviously, I want to overclock it as much as I can. How do you know how far you can push a CPU? Is there a formula or rule of thumb about how much you can overclock a CPU, or is it just trial and error?
