What is sideloading on a smartphone, and is it a bad thing?

I see the term sideloading used pretty often in articles about smartphones, but they don't seem to explain what it is. I understand that it is a way of installing apps, but it seems to often be used in a negative context. Does sideloading require the phone to be rooted?

Will being able to see exactly what info Carrier IQ tracks be enough to address privacy concerns?

Lot's of people, myself among them, were not happy to find out that personally identifiable information was potentially being sent to our wireless carriers without our permissions. Carrier IQ has now said that it will show exactly what info it is tracking in an effort to assuage concerns.

What are the drawbacks of using a protective case on a smartphone?

I got my wife a new iPhone 4s for her birthday, and told her that I would also get her a case for it if she wanted to pick one out. When she got back from work the next day, she said someone at work told her that it was a bad idea and could cause her phone to fail because of overheating.

What does the crash in Kindle Fire sales say about the tablet market?

The Kindle Fire sold like hotcakes when it came out last year. All the sales reports I have seen for the 1st quarter of 2012 show a huge drop-off in sales down to 750,000 units from the 4.8 million sold the last quarter of 2011. Target is even dropping the Kindle Fire from it's stores. What does this tell us?

Will apps written for ARM Androids run on Androids with the new Intel Medfield architecture?

The new Lava XOLO X900 should be available soon. As far as I know every Android made up to know has utilized ARM processors. Fragmentation is a fact of Android life which I have never really found to be that big of a problem.

When I get a new Android phone, can I migrate all of my data or do I have to start over?

I've had my first Android smartphone for almost two years, and I think it is time for an upgrade. This is the first time I've replaced a smartphone, and I don't know how big of a deal it is. Do I get to keep all of my data and apps? I assume that I can go reinstall the apps from the Android Market, er, Google Play.

I was doing yardwork this weekend while my 9 year old daughter went on a bike ride around the neighborhood, and when she got back I noticed that she had her Nintendo DS in her bike's basket. I asked her why she took her DS on a bike ride, and got an answer that I was not expecting. She was wardriving. On a bicycle.

Why has it taken US mobile carriers so long to start bricking stolen mobile devices?

There was an announcement last week that the FCC and the major carriers are creating a database of stolen phones, which can then be used to prevent the them from being reactivated. Makes sense to me. But why has it taken so long to implement a system like this in the US?

I have a staff member that hasn't really left the tech world of the 90s behind. �I have been goofing around with my new Samsung Galaxy S II in her presence for a few weeks now, and she has come around to the idea that a smartphone would be a nice replacement for her flip phone. �I wholeheartedly agree.

How does the speed of LTE compare to a WiFi connection?

Verizon, and to a lesser extent AT&T, have been advertising their LTE networks. �I don't use nearly as much of the data under my plan as I used to because of Wi-Fi at work, home, and two pubs in between, and as a result, I've gotten used to my smartphone having a PDQ data stream most of the time.

Will the new $99 Nokia Lumina 900 finally get Microsoft traction in the smartphone game?

The only question I have when ranking market penetration of smartphones is whether Windows devices are 3rd (ahead of RIM) or 4th (behind RIM). The new Nokia Lumina 900 is a great looking phone just from a design standpoint, but then again so were some of the Symbian OS phones that Nokia put out, and we know how well those did in the US.

Why hasn't my Android phone been updated to ICS?

I'm a pretty patient guy. I read about ICS, got excited, and waited. I'm still waiting. I have a Motorola RAZR, which may not be brand new, but it isn't as if I'm packing a 3 year old device. I just read an article that said 1.6% of all Androids worldwide are running on ICS. 1.6%!?!

I've read complaints about the iPad 3 getting really hot. I've also been around long enough to know that every little complaint gets blown out of proportion during a big product launch, and non-stories become stories. Even so, I have had laptops in the past that actually were too hot to comfortably rest on my lap.

Is it better to buy the pay version of smartphone apps instead of installing the free version?

I was glancing at news headlines and saw a piece that suggested the free versions of many apps were not so free after all - they used much more power because of the ads. I had never even thought of this before, but limited battery life is one of the constant battles, even with my Droid 4. Unfortunately, I read this around 4 a.m.

Will your company allow employees to use rooted Android devices?

Does it make a difference to you if someone's BYOD has been rooted? Probably 50% of the people I know that use an Android have rooted it. I'm sure that the percentage of the general public that roots their device is much lower than that, but still, there are plenty of rooted Androids out there.

The thing that I have heard the most buzz about on the iPad 3 is the new retina display. I understand that it the pixel count is way up, but to be honest I have always thought that the display on the "old" iPad 2 looks great - sharp and crisp with excellent colors.

How did my iPhone suddenly become 4G?

After the last OS update, my iPhone 4S has started displaying a 4G indicator. I didn't benchmark my 4S before the update, but my "seat of the pants" benchmarking doesn't notice any increase in the speed of my internet access. It was my understand that NO iPhone supported 4G capability. So what's the deal here?

Ok, I admit that I can't resist shiny new Apple things. I still remember sitting at my grandparents house and watching the 1984 Superbowl Ad that debuted the Macintosh. Mind............blown; apple fan born. So I was not happy when I waited too long to pre-order and found out that I had missed the Apple train for the iPad 3.
