How to completely wipe personal information from an Android phone?

    Posted July 9, 2014 - 5:15 pm

Avast released a report saying that they were able to recover data, including rather compromising personal photos, from used Android devices that had been “wiped” prior to resale. As someone who replaces my devices on a regular basis, this is an issue of some concern for me. If a factory reset won’t do the trick, what will?

How much of a problem is Android fragmentation?

    Posted July 6, 2014 - 10:16 pm

While I still hear complaints about Android fragmentation from time to time, it seems as if those complaints are much less common than they used to be. Am I just going deaf, or is fragmentation not as much of an issue as it used to be? If it isn’t, what’s changed?

How to use NFC tags with Android devices?

    Posted June 27, 2014 - 9:58 pm

My current Android phone is “NFC capable,” but there really isn’t anything that offers guidance on what I can do with that or how to use it. I know that some places use NFC for “tap to pay” but as far as I know there aren’t any stores that use that around me. Other than that, what can NFC be used to do?

Why is Verizon refusing to honor the two years data service agreement for Chromebook Pixel?

    Posted June 24, 2014 - 5:35 pm

The $1200 or so Chromebook Pixel came with 2 years of 100MB per month wireless service from Verizon included. I’m literally looking at the paperwork that says so right now. Now Verizon is telling me, nope, that never happened and we are shutting off your service now, after one year. What can be done about this?

How does Towelroot work to root Android devices?

    Posted June 21, 2014 - 10:12 pm

I’ve rooted a number of Android phones and tablets over the years. It has always been a multistep process - install software on laptop from manufacturer, unlock bootloader, install more software to root, connect device being USB cable, etc.

How to get rid of TouchWiz on non-rooted Samsung Galaxy S5?

    Posted June 17, 2014 - 3:00 pm

I know that you can root an Android device and install the version of Android OS that you want. For me, after spending nearly a year using a Nexus 7, that preferred version is plain old Android. Now I’m thinking of replacing my S4 with an S5, but Samsung has a habit of putting a lot of things I don’t need and will never use on devices.

How to make Siri pronounce names correctly?

    Posted June 15, 2014 - 5:04 pm

This fits squarely in the “first world problems” category, but it annoys me when Siri pronounces my friends’ names incorrectly. This happens a lot with friends that have more unique spellings of their names. Is there a way to teach Siri how to say names correctly?

    Posted June 9, 2014 - 10:14 pm

A friend of mine sent a link about Slingshot, an iOS app that essentially works like Snapchat - it lets you send and receive photos and videos that are automatically deleted once they are viewed. However, the app had already been pulled by the time I had a chance to check it out. What’s up? Why did Facebook pull Slingshot?

  • Question

What’s new in Google Maps 3.0?

    Posted May 6, 2014 - 10:13 pm

Honestly, I couldn’t ask for much more with Google Maps “old” version. It does everything I need, has a decent UI, and is generally quite accurate (unlike those dark days of 15 years ago when Mapquest would routinely send me to corn fields). 3.0.0 is supposed to be a major update. What does it bring to the show that is new?
