  • The year ahead of us will see technology that no-one could ever have predicted in 1950. Smartphones that are as powerful as computers. 3D television. Touch screen tablets galore. But there will also be some spectacular failures. Here are some products we're pretty sure have no future.

  • Now these hackers are funny: they took Microsoft's newest and most revolutionary new product, the Kinect, and hacked it so it could be controlled with it's nemeses, the Mac iPhone and iPad. This hack is fascinating, because not only could you play dodgeball by "throwing" balls at the controller-less person in the room, but you "throw" them using the Apple products. Very clever.

  • Over its 27-year career, NASA's most-traveled spaceship flew 39 missions and witnessed a number of firsts. It was the first shuttle to return to space after the Challenger disaster. It deployed the Hubble space telescope. And it was the first shuttle to dock with the International Space Station.

Following is a photo journey of this historic vessel's final mission.

  • 2010 has been a year where new technologies have really taken off. Apple's iPad redefined the concept of personal computer. Microsoft introduced one potential future of home video game entertainment with the controller-free Kinect. But, 2010 also had its share of failures and (some thankful) endings. Here we explore some of the more interesting tech fails, social network bombs and the world's oldest Twitter user.

  • The holiday season is upon us. Online shoppers are clicking away, snickering at the thought of having to go to a "mall". Santa is fitting his reindeer with new GPS trackers. Rudolph's nose is now LED. There's no question that technology has infiltrated the yuletide. Geeks are Santa's elves, and they're creating lots of fun decorations.

  • Much ado has been made about Google Labs. For good reason, actually. Some of the experiments from Google Labs have turned into excellent applications that are truly mindblowing (hello, Google Goggles). But what about Google's ugly stepsister? Yes, Yahoo has its very own laboratories, just brimming with second-tier ideas and applications that really are worth a look.

  • There are times when I will sit down in front of the computer screen to complete a task (writing code, writing an article) and find myself staring blankly with absolutely no ideas or inspiration. Such was the case with this article: I had no ideas on what to write. Then came the idea: what about you creative people out there? What inspires you? When or what time of day do you find inspiration? What is a good synonym for "inspiration"?! So I polled a bunch of people from all different walks of life out there in the ether to find out exactly how they find inspiration...or how inspiration finds them.

  • Commented on Samsung expands its Android stable with two nifty new tablets [video]

After Verizon's declined to carry the Galaxy S2 (a phone I've been waiting for since, well, time began), I was rather despondent. But then, they announced the Droid Prime, which sounds like an even better deal. The downside? Another month of waiting. My Blackberry Storm grows heavier in my pocket daily. Now, they've taken the first steps toward something I am keenly interested in: the combination of a tablet and smartphone. This concept is not new, but the Samsung Note has specs that make this Note sound exactly what I've really been waiting for. Or is it? I've known with emerging technologies there always has to come a time to draw a line in the sand, but the current tech, and then absolutely ignore the industry announcements to avoid new product envy. So a week or so after telling myself that the Droid Prime is going to be the new Joe phone (who also happens to love Ice Cream Sandwiches), along comes something new and drool-worth on the horizon. Is it even a consideration, though? Is this new Note another Galaxy S2 that has tons of hype and promotion (5 million sold worldwide in just a few months!)? I just don't know. To answer your question, Peter, yes. Very enamored of the idea. The problem? No plans for a Stateside launch (at least as of this writing). No guarantee that Verizon will carry this "phonetab". No real concrete evidence that this will be LTE. There's talk, but it's just talk. Maybe wishful thinking. I don't know.

  • Commented on Verizon getting a branded version of the next Google reference phone?

There's another rumor going around that the Nexus Prime is actually being developed by Samsung, which means the company's AMOLED screen will be a part of the Prime package. That reason, in itself, makes me less despondent over the Vz decision not to carry the Galaxy S2.

  • Commented on Weather apps for BlackBerry to keep you high and dry

The trial thing is indeed interesting. Just to double-check, I launched Weatherbug on my Storm and was greeted with a screen that says, "WeatherBug Trial - 30 days left."Perhaps this is the wrong app for my Storm; maybe I downloaded the wrong version or something. But I still am receiving the trial message. Also, this could be something where there isn't actually an enforced trial. Meaning, I could keep this app going indefinitely.I will try to re-download and give it a shot. I was a Weatherbug user for my desktop for years, so I was also surprised at the trial.

  • Commented on Weather apps for BlackBerry to keep you high and dry

Anonymous #1 was correct. After removing the mysterious Weatherbug Trial app from my Storm, I went in (again) and downloaded the storm.jad file. Much better this time. WeatherBug does push info like the other two apps, is configurable like the BBWeather app, and has a very pleasant and informative online interface when the icon is clicked. AND...no trial information B.S. I really must find out what this is all about at some point.Anonymous #2 is also correct. I simply input my zip code to get my local weather. There is also the option to let your phone's GPS get your location. This didn't work on my phone, but I will explore this option further...and this could be the coolest aspect of WB.

Not sure why, but I always name my personal computer "Hal" and then the year I bought the thing. So my current laptop is "Hal 2007". When I was a system admin, I named my servers after pop culture computers: WOPR ("WarGames"), MCP (from "Tron"), HOLLY (from "Red Dwarf"), DELOS (from "WestWorld") and TK421. The last one wasn't a computer. Just a stormtrooper from Star Wars. But I always liked the rhythm of the name.
