  • Google Nexus One: A Successful Flop

    Posted April 29, 2010 - 9:18 pm

Has any smartphone had a more unusual marketing campaign than the Nexus One? Google's touchscreen Android handset debuted in January to mostly favorable reviews--PC World gave it 4.5 out of 5 stars--but sales since then have been less than stellar. In March, mobile research firm Flurry reported that Google had sold only 135,000 Nexus Ones in the first 74 days after the phone's launch. By comparison, about a million Motorola Droids and Apple iPhones were sold in the same period following their respective rollouts.

  • iPhone lessons from Google's Nexus One

    Posted March 5, 2010 - 12:19 pm

In 2010, as in 2007, the entire technology industry gathered at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, only to have the hot tech news of the week usurped by a smartphone announcement back in the Bay Area. In 2007, it was the announcement of the iPhone at Macworld Expo. This year, Google tried to replicate the experience by calling a media-only event of its own to announce the Nexus One, the first device running the search-engine giant's Android operating system to be sold directly by Google.

While Google's Nexus One may have its issues (its many, many issues), one thing that nobody is complaining about is its gorgeous, 800-by-480 pixel AMOLED screen. When compared to the iPhone 3GS's paltry 480-by-320 pixel LCD screen, well, it hardly seems a contest.
