Obtaining BIOS Information

By Jim Pile, ITworld |  How-to

Reader Morris G. poses a BIOS question:

"I would like to determine the date of my BIOS. I don't see the
date in the boot-up sequence, so I was wondering if it's possible
to get the information from the operating system?"

BIOS information appears in the two places within the system registry.
To find it in Windows 2000, click Start and Run, then type "regedit"
and press Enter. When RegEdit opens, navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Biosinfo. This
location will provide the BIOS date. If you need more information, then
navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE\DESCRIPTION\System. Here you'll
find the BIOS date, the BIOS type, version, and the video BIOS date.

In Windows NT 4.0, run RegEdit and go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE\DESCRIPTION\System to get the BIOS date. We
could not locate additional information in Windows NT 4.0.
