Stephen Fry hit by Twitter ID hack

By Carrie-Ann Skinner, PC Advisor (UK) |  Security, Twitter 11 comments

Hackers are targeting Twitter users in a bid to steal personal information, says Sophos.

According to the security company, thousands of Twitter members have reported receiving messages from friends inviting them to visit a website containing funny pictures, a blog and in some cases even the chance to win an Apple iPhone.

However, Sophos warns that the links are bogus and clicking on them will result in users being directed to a fake Twitter page designed to steal their login and password.

Actor and tech-fan Stephen Fry is reportedly among the Twitter member to have fallen victim to the online scam. However, it is not thought his account has been compromised.

"It would be bad enough to hand your Twitter username and password over to a criminal, as they could pose as you online and spread malware and spam to your friends and followers. However, as an alarming 41 percent of internet users foolishly use the same username and password for every website they access, the potential for abuse is even greater," said Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos.

"Twitter users who may have lost control of their accounts need to change their passwords as a matter of priority before more harm is done. Compromised social networking accounts are valuable for hackers as they can use them for a springboard for spam campaigns, identity theft attacks and other online crime."

I have read this article regarding Stephen Fry and his interest in Twitter, there is also an article in the Sunday times today about Stephen and some of the aggressive people who have posted a tweet to him recently. If he is getting abuse from other users I don't blame him for wanting to quit the popular internet site. I like Stephen Fry I think he is a very intelligent person who in my opinion would be an asset to the site. I can understand fans and fellow celebrities being concerned over Stephen as he has battled depression in the past, and has really tried to overcome his illness the best he can. I myself have been a victim of this type of illness and it is an uphill struggle to keep it at bay. I have only recently become a computer user I am 62 years old now, I do sometimes go onto internet sites and leave comments on various topics and I have also seen some of the unkind posts people have left regarding certain stories in the news etc. One very unkind and rude comment was made about one of the pop group members of Sugarbabes who was ill with exhaustion, it was a sexual remark which I won't enlighten on, I did post a comment back saying I thought this person's remark was out of order and reported my complaint to the site. I think if people haven't got anything constructive to say why do they bother.

When you are searching for a great scan that can help you keep your computer running like new, I would suggest that you visit http://www.Search-and-destroy.com. Here I found the antispyware solution from Search-and-destroy and it was exactly what I needed to protect my computer and eliminate the bugs and viruses that would make it run slow, freeze up and shut down. Search-and-destroy Antispyware was the answer to my computer bug problems and it was certainly worth every penny I spent to have this great antispyware to protect my PC. Not only does it work great but it cost less than many of the other scans available.
