Struggling Sony combines PS3 & Vaio units

By Oliver Garnham, PC Advisor (UK) |  Business, PS3, Sony 30 comments

Sony, which is set to report its first annual loss in 14 years, is implementing a company-wide reorganization that will combine its PlayStation, Vaio and Walkman businesses into one unit.

The new Networked Products and Services Group will include Sony's games console, personal computer, audio product, new mobile product and Sony Media Software and Services divisions. All of these products currently provide access, or will in the future, to the PlayStation Network, Sony's online content distribution system.

"This reorganisation is designed to transform Sony into a more innovative, integrated and agile global company with its next generation of leadership firmly in place," said Sony chairman and CEO Howard Stringer, who also adds president to his list of roles as part of the restructuring plan.

"Consumers want products that are networked, multi-functional and service-enhanced utilising open technologies, and user experiences that are rich, shared and, increasingly, green."

The changes, which will take effect on April 1, will create two distinct business arms at Sony. As well as the Networked Products and Services Group, Sony will have a consumer division focusing on televisions, digital imaging, home audio and home video.

the PS3 isn't an all out replacement for a computer, but it's a pretty nice package for a multimedia center. 808

I am not a fanboy of either console but I will have to say I have gone through 3 New Xbox 360's in the past two years and my PS3 (Purchased 1/9/2007) is still going strong. They know how to build hardware that works. At the end of the day the 360's life cycle is almost over and they still can't fix the RROD issues. Agian I do like both systems but if a game comes out for both platforms I have to go with PS3 because I know the system is not going to break.

"just install linux, get VMWare and then install Windows or Macintosh or whatever your heart desires"who needs windows or any microsoft product these days, wow, a few in the dark that refuse to see the ligth, remain.installing windows in the ps3 is useless, and blassfemy.

who the hell wants to play a 360 and listen to an engine from a plane take off. PS3 is a superior machine will eventual be the death of Microsoft gaming. Sorry 360 your stalling

Its funny that the attacks seem to be directed towards the PS3. The console division of Sony isn't actually doing badly financially. Sony as a group however also owns banks, movie studies, television production and broadcasting companies, mobile telecoms, semi conductor manufacturers as well the electronic and gaming areas you are referring to... and lots more. I know the mobile phone part is doing particularly poorly at the moment (Sony Ericsson) and I expect the banking parts are feeling the pinch too.Basically what I am trying to say is that the losses for Sony aren't down to the game consoles they produce. Sony is a massive group of companies with gaming being one small part, so the fanboys shouldn't jump to conclusions.

Haah, look at you all.

Why would anyone install crappy microsoft windows on a ps3??!! Do you want it to break? That's like knowingly sleeping with a person who has AIDS.
Anonymous 2 years ago
I have gone through two xbox360s in little over a year. Everyone I know that has had a 360 no long does; they break. Someone was right when they said, "Disposable Console". For microsoft to drop their system to $199 was no big deal. A $299 PS3 is. I'm giving my 360 sh@t away!
