December 13, 2012, 11:34 AM — The folks over at the AT&T TechChannel on YouTube have posted a couple of training videos aimed at improving customer service for its telephone repairmen who had to come into homes to install new telephones or fix the lines.
But as I sat watching the videos, I couldn't help but notice how verbally abusive some of these 1950s and 1960s housewives were to "Jim Cannon", the fictional repairman featured in the films. Take a look at the first one, produced in the 1950s:
I guess these videos were pretty popular, because in this video we get a bunch of sequel films, showing "The further adventures of Jim Cannon", with more nasty housewives berating the telephone repairman.
I suppose it would have been better to show an "after" scenario, in which a properly trained Jim Cannon could deflect some of the anger, but we never got to see that.
Also, I find it amusing that a lot of these women were calling Jim Cannon "Young Man", where the actor playing him clearly looks like he's in his '40s (maybe that was the style back then).
