The Xerox Alto

While Microsoft and Apple partisans will argue over who stole the GUI from whom, it's pretty clear that the first windowed-type interface came from Xerox, a company most famous for photocopiers, with their experimental Alto workstation in 1974. This file browser window doesn't look that different from windows you'd seen in apps 20 or 30 years later.
