Legal follies, Facebook-style

By Amy Bennett  Add a new comment

Dear morons everywhere: Did you know that Facebook does not exist on some plane completely removed from the mundane realities of the legal system, and that you can get in trouble for things you do with it, just as you could with any other form of communication?

For instance, if someone has taken out a restraining order against you that prevents you from "telephoning, contacting, or otherwise communicating with the petitioner, directly or indirectly," then you shouldn't "poke" them on Facebook, because you might go to jail!

And if you're wanted in the U.S. on fraud charges and on the run in Mexico, you probably shouldn't keep updating your Facebook profile talking about how much fun you're having there -- especially if one of your Facebook friends is a former Justice Department official.
