Ever since the first crude Star Trek conventions, dressing up as your favorite space alien or starship captain has been a hallowed tradition among geeks. Go to a Halloween shindig today and you'll run into representatives running the gamut of science fiction, from Captain Kirk to Starbuck from the rebooted Battlestar Galactica franchise.
If you want to set yourself apart from the pack, I recommend taking one of two strategies: obscurity or difficulty. For instance, everyone will recognize that a blue shirt and some pointy ears make you Mr. Spock -- but what's the fun if everyone recognizes it? Instead, paint half your face white and half of it black and smugly inform the uninitiated that you're one half of the feuding alien duo from the Let That Be Your Last Battlefield episode of the original Star Trek series. Similarly, if you could just throw a black vest over a white shirt and claim to be Han Solo; impress your friends by upping the degree of difficulty and going as Han Solo frozen in carbonite.
