Cat's death offers cautionary tale on e-rumormongering

1,700 members of Canada's political elite, including the nation's prime minister, were gathered at a gala dinner honoring the country's military, when a rumor began circulating among the guests: Margaret Thatcher, the former Prime Minister of Britain, was dead. The uber-connected group began quickly texting one another and various members of the media. Prime Minister Harper's people even e-mailed the current British leader to offer condolences. There was just one problem: the "Margaret Thatcher" who had died was the Canadian transport minister's cat, which he had named after the British leader.
