Watch people explain UNIX in 1982

Archive film showcases the promotion of operating system by Bell Labs

If your knowledge of the UNIX operating system is basically the line from the 1993 movie "Jurassic Park" (where Lexie goes, "It's a UNIX system! I know this!), you might want to brush up a bit more on the subject. Sure, there's Wikipedia, but if you're a video fan, you'll want to check out this film, published today on YouTube by the folks from the AT&T Tech Channel.

The film, "The UNIX System: Making Computers Easier to Use" was aimed at students who were interested in engineering, math, computer science or other sciences, AT&T says. The film includes some brief interviews with Dennis Ritchie and Ken Thompson, who in 1969 created the system that would become UNIX. The film also features a discussion about spell-checking and grammar correction that many copy editors of today would find fascinating. For a "what the heck is that?" moment, jump ahead to the 22:33 mark, where the credits of the film include a computer-graphics dance/yoga sequence:

My other favorite moment in this film? The part where the woman was doing the speech recognition program (the computer was calculating 2 to the 100th power), and took some swigs from her coffee mug (at least, I hope that was coffee) while the computer kept talking. Yay limited editing!
