How does Precise Pangolin Ubuntu stack up against Windows 8?

Canonical is apparently making a concerted effort to break into the consumer and enterprise market with Precise Pangolin, aka Ubuntu 12.04. Linux has been wildly successful in many areas, but I think it is fair to say that desktop OS is not one of them.

Is Mozilla right about Windows 8 being a "return to the dark ages"?

What do you think about Mozilla's claims that Microsoft is returning to the era when developers and users didn't have browser choices? Mozilla says that Windows 8 will only allow Internet Explorer to run the Windows desktop. Are they right? Will this really limit users to IE?

What is the appeal of the Tizen OS that Samsung is reportedly considering for future devices?

Until about 6 weeks ago, I had never heard of Tizen, and suddenly there is buzz that Samsung may be looking at moving to Tizen OS. So Samsung, who is doing very well with Android, wants to move to a different OS?! What am I missing here?

Microsoft has apparently decided that offering DVD playback was too expensive for Windows 8, so if you want to watch a movie on DVD you have to purchase an additional DVD playback function for Windows Media Center.

I've seen a number of questions/comments here on ITWorld about Ubuntu, and I though it might be fun to play around with it and learn a little about Linux. I have an old 486 machine stuck in a closet at home. I understand that in general Linux does not require the latest and greatest hardware to run.

Anonymous has become something of a media phenomenon recently, with "highs" from hacking into various company sites and exposing users to "lows" such as the recent revelations that The Man had an informant on the inside working for them. Now there has been a release of Anonymous OS, complete with Guy Fox mask.

Is Ubuntu a legitimate alternative to Red Hat for enterprise use?

Mark Shuttleworth is claiming that Ubuntu has overtaken RHEL for web servers. Admitedly, Shuttleworth might be just a wee bit biased, and he is cherry picking the web server stat, but I've always thought of Ubuntu as the Linux choice for consumers' desktops, and Red Hat as the Linux choice for enterprise users.

Windows 8 looks pretty, and in theory it could be one OS to rule them all since variants will run on machines from PCs to tablets. But does it cater to casual individual users, or is it an enterprise focused OS?

The lack of a start button is a small thing....but at the same time it really isn't. Since I got my 1st PC back in 1994, there has been a start button in the bottom left of Windows that brings up the start menu. No more, but to me that seems reflect that this version of Windows is something different.
