February 13, 2013, 9:57 AM — Another cool video from Japan - DigInfo News is reporting on a project at Waseda University's School of Fundamental Science and Engineering that allows people to "perceive tactile sensation from visual stimulation."
By wearing a head-mounted display, participants can "see" a virtual object floating in front of them (at this point either a ball of fire or cube of ice), and by reaching out their hands to touch the object, they feel either a small sensation of coolness or heat. Watch the video to learn more:
Applications for the system include entertainment or communication, as well as rehabilitation, training and education, the report says.
