January 24, 2014, 11:03 AM — Before you read the rest of this post, let's get one thing out of the way. I LOVE my MacBook Pro, my iMac, my iPhone and a whole bunch of other Apple-related products. I've been using Macintosh products off and on for about 25 years now.
What annoys me about Apple, however, is its "We're so awesome that everything else smells" attitude when it comes to their advertising and/or marketing.
This smugness is on display with its latest video, which celebrates 30 years of the Macintosh computer. In the video, we get a whole bunch of interviews with "innovators", including Moby, who wouldn't exist as a musician if it wasn't for the Macintosh. So there, we can blame Apple for Moby.
Again, I love the company and what it's done for the world of computing. But couldn't Apple be a little bit more humble in its celebrations? Couldn't they acknowledge that other companies (including Microsoft and IBM) were also a bit responsible for the growth and popularity of the personal computer over the past 30 years?
Anyway, this seems to be a gripe mainly about Apple's current marketing strategy. If you want to see some cooler Mac videos from the past 30 years, check out this slideshow, including my favorite campaign, the "Mac vs. PC" ads, which poked fun at Windows / PC, but at least they acknowledged their existence.
