Are you getting your money's worth out of Netflix?

By Peter Smith  11 comments

Yesterday Netflix sent out a notification that it was raising the cost of "Blu-ray enabling" all Netflix accounts. As a Netflix customer with a Blu-ray player, that made me stop to think about whether it was worth it to keep paying the extra, which led to wondering if I was on the right plan and what kind of value I'm getting out of the service. Netflix feels like a good value to me, but is it really?

In order to be sure, I turned to FeedFlix.com, a site that measures your Netflix activity and crunches the numbers for you. At the bottom of this page you can see part of the results it turned up for me: I'm actually paying $5/rental due to my habit of leaving disks laying around for weeks before actually watching them. Hmm. Which isn't a slight on Netflix; as you can see, 71% of Netflix customers get more value than I do.

There're some downsides to using FeedFlix. First, you have to enter your Netflix username and password through the NetFlix API, which is obviously a security risk. The API login notes: "Your password will always remain private, but FeedFlix will have ongoing access to your account." I've had no trouble since first using the service a month or so ago, but that choice is up to you, and we claim no responsibility if something goes wrong as a result of you entering your data. Caveat emptor and all that. Second, FeedFlix can be a little wonky in making its initial connection to the Netflix API. I had to try several times before it would connect and 'link' the two accounts. Once it did it seems to aggregate data without any problems, but that first connection can be a bit frustrating.

If it seems a little strange to reccommend a site with two large downsides, I'm doing it because I haven't found any other site that offers similar functionality. I'd love to hear about others, if they exist. Please leave a comment with names and URLs!

FeedFlix worked like a charm. Nice reports in less than a minute. My price per movie turned out to be $1.12, I guess I'm getting a good deal with Netflix :)The Netflix Blue Ray increase is a little frustrating though. It's just another way of raising the price (not that the others don't do it, DirecTV for example). Blue Ray is the new standard. Some honesty, please... On the good side, the Netflix service, accuracy, speed and variety are great! I love it!

Good Catch, worked fine for me, only took about 30 seconds to get a very detailed overview.

Fascinating, you know I have alwyas wondered if Netflix was a good deal or a crock. I am leery because its yet another subscription thing and if you don't use it you lose it, just like my Gym bills. I dislike subscriptions and prefer "pay as you use" models personally though so I'm giving it a pass for now. Plus I only rent like 5 movies a year.

Having problems using Feedflix. Seems to be timing out. May just be the high volume because of the Google article placement. I'll try it again tonight to see how it works. I do a lot of instant movies & rentals, so I expect to see I'm getting a better deal than most ;)

Under your account, Netflix will give you a complete list of everything you've rented, with dates. I copied and pasted, and my editor counted the lines (movies). I did have to compute cost per movie myself. It was easier than posting this comment, by far. Those reCAPTA things are unreadable, and the try another doesn't seem to work.

I have tried about 6-7 times today, and no luck yet.Maybe the trouble is FireFox 3.0.8 ??I'll keep trying for maybe 5 or 6 times, then give up.

I tried this, but can't get it to go beyond 5%. Does not seem to be "humming along."

No luck for me either. Sounds good though. I'd love to try it.

I just had a hiccup and had to start over. This may be because I have about 4 years of Netflix history to sync.

Hi from the FeedFlix team. Thanks for the write-up. We just wanted to emphasize that there is no security risk in joining FeedFlix. Netflix uses the OAuth mechanism which allows your Netflix credentials (ie your email+password) to always remain private - these are *not* shared with FeedFlix. We apologize for the few hiccups you've had in signing up. Just saw a dozen or so users sign-up in the last few minutes - so everything's humming along fine now. Do come join!

As appealing as this service sounds I, like the author, found the initial setup to be not ready for prime time. I tried about a dozen time without success...
