iPhone 3GS: The S is for Speedy Delivery

By David Coursey, PC World |  Personal Tech, Apple, iPhone 2 comments

The "S" in the name of the new iPhone 3G S stands for speed, both in the phone itself and how it's being delivered to some customers.

Customers who ordered their phones direct from Apple's online store have begun receiving an e-mailed "Shipping Notification" from Apple. Included is a UPS tracking number that shows, in at least some cases, delivery as early as tomorrow or Thursday.

The official introduction of the newest iPhone is set for 8 A.M. Friday in Apple's U.S. retail stores.

Like many Apple products, the iPhone GS is being shipped directly to customers from a facility in the coastal boomtown of Shenzhen, China (Pop. 8.6 million). Three-day global delivery isn't one of the Seven Wonders of the World, but for anxious iPhone customers, for the next day or two it probably comes close.

David Coursey is waiting. He tweets as techinciter and can be e-mailed from this Web site at www.coursey.com/contact.

My 32GB 3G S is on its way to me - UPS tracking info shows its origin in Shenzhen, China, and then an origin and departure scan for Chek Lap Kok, Hong Kong. UPS says I should expect delivery tomorrow, 6/17/09. For reference, I'm in New Jersey. Looking forward to tomorrow!

Yeah, I got the shipping notice too. Once the billing info hit, UPS said that I would receive it on the 17th. About 2 hours later it said I would receive it on the 18th. Wouldn't surprise me if that slips to the 19th. People shouldn't get their panties in a bunch just yet as there still hasn't been a departure scan as of yet - until that happens, the phones are still sitting on the ground in China.
