Distracted driver game proves perils of texting

By Amy Bennett  Add a new comment

I don't text while driving. Not because I'm a goody goody but because I prefer talking.

Not being a texter, I have no idea how distracting it is or how dangerous, but that doesn't stop me from shaking my head with disapproval when I pass a texting driver.

Now, thanks to NYTimes.com and their distracted driver game, all of us non-texters can now shake our heads knowingly.

The game works like this: As you cruise down the highway, the game will tell you (with alarming frequency I might add) to switch lanes. During your lane switching maneuvers you will be prompted with text messages that demand a response. After you've responded to all 3 text messages a results page will show you how much slower your reaction time was while texting.

I have to say, I found the disclaimers even more alarming than my dismal results: 1) that as with all games, your results will improve with practice; 2) regardless of how stellar your results, texting while driving is still dangerous.
