Personal Tech Question

  • Question

Will driving wheels that are compatible with the PS3 also work with the PS4?

    Posted December 26, 2013 - 2:26 pm

One of my more fun Christmas presents was a copy of Gran Turismo 6 and a Logitech Driving Force wheel for my PS3. I’m also planning on getting a PS4 soon, and now that I’ve learned how much fun driving games are with a wheel, I’m a wheel devotee.
  • Question

What is a good, scholarly book about the development and art of video games?

    Posted December 19, 2013 - 2:52 am

My brother and I have an ongoing debate about the merits of video games as art. I would like to give him some books for Christmas that examine them from a scholarly perspective, no puff pieces. Are there any good ones that someone could suggest?
  • Question

When will the Oculus Rift be available to purchase?

    Posted December 17, 2013 - 7:59 pm

When will the general public be able to purchase an Oculus Rift (the 3D headset) and about how much are they going to cost?
  • Question

Is Sony winning the next generation console war with the PS4?

    Posted December 9, 2013 - 3:43 pm

I know that it is early in, but it seems as if I’m hearing a lot more buzz about the PS4 than the XBox One. It makes a difference over the life of a console, since developers are more likely to release console exclusives for the console that is doing best. Is Sony pulling away from Nintendo and Microsoft with the PS4?
  • Question

How to change profile photo on PS4?

    Posted December 5, 2013 - 5:25 pm

Instead of using the baked-in Playstation Network avatars, how can I use an actual photograph for my profile image?
  • Question

How to limit bandwidth usage while streaming Netflix?

    Posted November 27, 2013 - 1:53 pm

I have a ton of Netflix compatible devices that I use (tablet, smartphone, Wii, Nintendo 3DS, PS3, laptop, desktop PC). Unfortunately my ISP has a 150Gb monthly data cap and they just increased my rate - thanks AT&T. Is there a way to limit bandwidth usage for the non-PC devices?
  • Question

Are all Xbox One disk drives extremely loud?

    Posted November 25, 2013 - 5:18 pm

One of my friends is a pretty serious gamer, and he preordered both the XBox One and PS4. He invited me and some other folks over for a beer, burgers, and console unveiling, which was cool, except the hard drive on his XBox One sounds terrible. It clacks, whirs and grinds VERY audibly.
  • Question

Can a user replace the HDD on the new Xbox One?

    Posted November 21, 2013 - 5:05 pm

One of the disadvantages of the X360 vs. the PS3 was the inability to easily replace the hard drive on the X360, while the PS3 had a standard laptop size HDD that was quick and easy to swap out.
  • Question

Are there any significant problems with the new PS4?

    Posted November 18, 2013 - 4:19 pm

When the X360 came out, the first version of the console suffered from the Red Ring of Death, aka RROD. Early PS3s also suffered from a Yellow Light of Death, aka YLOD, although not to the same level at the X360’s problem. Anyone know whether there are similar issues with the new PS4? I’ve read about a 0.4% failure rate.
  • Question

Can a US PS4 play games released in Japan?

    Posted November 15, 2013 - 4:01 pm

I’m a big fan of a lot of more obscure Japanese games that never make it to the US. I’ve actually imported consoles before so that I could play Japanese only releases, but that is an expensive option. Is the PS4 region locked, or can it play games from all regions (US, Japan, Europe)?
  • Question

Can Android based gaming systems compete with dedicated gaming consoles from Sony and Microsoft?

    Posted November 13, 2013 - 5:00 pm

Some of the screenshots I’ve seen of games on the Ouya and GameStick that look amazingly close to console games like the X360 and PS3. Has the software reached a point where it can be considered a legit competitor to those consoles?
  • Question

How to remove previous owner’s Apple ID from used iPod?

    Posted November 11, 2013 - 4:26 pm

I got a used iPod Touch recently, and everything seems fine except that when I attempt to log into iTunes, the previous owner’s Apple ID pops-up and it requests a password. How can I get rid of this so that I can use my own Apple ID?
  • Question

Would the Wii Mini be a good choice for a second gaming console?

    Posted November 4, 2013 - 3:25 pm

I’m not quite ready to spend $500-$600 for a new Sony Playstation 4 or Microsoft XBox One (cost of system+tax+one game). Maybe in a year or so. The Wii U doesn’t have a lot of games I really want that I can’t already get on my PS3, although there are a few Nintendo exclusives that I would like to play.

  • Question

Would it be better to get a used or refurbished game system?

    Posted October 31, 2013 - 3:08 pm

My X360 has put in almost 5 years of yeoman’s service, but it’s on it’s last legs. I have a large library of games, and since the XBox One is not backwards compatible, it’s either get another X360 or lose access to all those games. Gamestop sells both refurbished and used systems - is there an advantage of one over the other?
  • Question

Do the new FAA regulations that allow use of electronic devices apply to both domestic and international flights?

    Posted October 31, 2013 - 1:34 pm

I just read about the decision to allow passenger to use electronic devices during all phases of flight. Does anyone know if this applies to international flights as well?
  • Question

Would it still make sense to buy a PS3 or X360 with the new generation machines just around the corner?

    Posted October 20, 2013 - 8:40 pm

I came across a 500Gb Playstation 3 at the local video game shop for $150, including a used game. A new PS4 will cost $400, and a new XBox One will be $500. I’ve missed this generation of gaming (except for a Wii, and I still have an original XBox and GameCube though). Will it be a waste of money to buy a PS3 this late in the product cycle?
  • Question

What is the greatest video game of all time?

    Posted October 10, 2013 - 3:50 pm

I had a birthday party with friends last night, and we ended up playing some video games, which in turn led to a spirited discussion of video game history and the greatest video games of all times.
  • Question

What is the practical usefulness of flexible displays?

    Posted October 7, 2013 - 8:22 pm

LG has announced a flexible display in a press release. I think that’s cool in a “well, that’s neat” sort of way, but what are practical uses of a flexible display.
  • Question

When will the iPad Mini with a Retina display be released?

    Posted October 2, 2013 - 2:50 pm

I know the release of the next iPad Mini with Retina display has been pushed back, but does anyone have an idea of when to look for it. I’ve been planning to get one for my boyfriend for Christmas. Are they likely to be released in time for Christmas?
  • Question

What’s the difference between Chromecast and Miracast?

    Posted September 26, 2013 - 2:59 pm

When looking at Chromecast, I came across mentions of Miracast a few times, which I’d never heard of even though it has been around for a while. Like Chromecast, Miracast is a dongle that plugs into the HDMI port of a TV and acts much like a physical HDMI connection.
  • Question

Will it harm smartphones and tablets if you use a different charger than the OEM charger?

    Posted September 25, 2013 - 3:49 pm

I have a number of phones and tablets around my house, and we don’t always use the USB “wall wart” chargers that came with each device, and at work we commonly use each others chargers. Is this ok to do, or could this actually damage our devices?
  • Question

How to fix Nexus 7 that won’t do anything after screen timeout?

    Posted September 24, 2013 - 9:14 pm

I was watching Netflix and after I paused it for a few minutes and the display “timed-out” aka went black. No big deal, right, except this time nothing responds. There are only 3 physical buttons, power, volume+ and volume-, and pushing them does nothing. It doesn’t have a removable battery, so I can’t just do a battery pull.
  • Question

What did the JSS15R OTA update for Nexus 7 change?

    Posted September 19, 2013 - 9:08 pm

I just got an OTA update (JSS15R) today for my 2013 Nexus 7, but can’t seem to find anything different. Does anyone know what this changed?
  • Question

How does inductive charging compare with traditional charging?

    Posted September 17, 2013 - 8:58 pm

I was thinking of getting an inductive charger for my new tablet, but I’ve never used one before. Does anyone know how they compare with a traditional plug-in charger when it comes to charging time? Does an inductive charger take about the same amount of time to charge a device?
