What’s the biggest announcement out of E3 2014?

    Posted June 9, 2014 - 11:03 pm

I have been too busy with work to follow E3 closely this year. I’m bummed, because there are those occasional E3 moments that are truly memorable. Remember when Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess was announced back in ‘06? I sure do, and I remember people actually weeping when that announcement trailer played. It was awesome.

What is it going to take for wearables to achieve real market penetration?

    Posted June 8, 2014 - 9:34 pm

There has been a wave of wearables hitting the market for the past year or two, with everything from Nike’s Fuelband to Pebble watches to Google Glass getting lots of press. However, I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve seen people “in the wild” wearing any of it.

How to copy PS3 game saves to USB flash drive?

    Posted June 5, 2014 - 9:27 pm

Thanks in part to Sony’s generosity with free games on PSN, I’m quickly running out of space on my PS3’s internal hard drive. How can I copy my PS3 game save files to my USB flash drive?
  • Question

What are you looking forward to at E3 2014?

    Posted June 2, 2014 - 4:26 pm

I'm always pretty excited to see what the big companies will bring to E3. This year, I am particularly interested to see what Sony has to say about the next year of the PS4. Seeing what Nintendo brings to E3 should be interesting as well. What do you guys want to see?
  • Question

Why is there so much excitement about Nintendo releasing a Gamecube controller adapter?

    Posted May 30, 2014 - 6:21 pm

I've seen a ton of stories on gaming websites over the past couple of days talking about Nintendo releasing an adapter that will permit the use of old, wired Gamecube controllers on the Wii U. I don't have a Wii U and I didn't have a Gamecube - what's so great about going from a modern wireless controller to a vintage wired one?
  • Question

How to switch back to the previous version of Google Maps?

    Posted May 23, 2014 - 6:10 am

Ever since the update to the latest version of Google Maps, my laptop chugs along like it's a 10 year old computer when I use it. Is there a way to revert to the older version that is less resource intensive?
  • Question

How would Russia shutting down ground stations effect GPS?

    Posted May 14, 2014 - 7:08 pm

One of the responses Russia has threatened in retaliation for sanctions imposed by the US over the annexation of Crimea is that they will shut down Russian GPS stations to disrupt navigation. How would this have any impact on a space based system of satellites, which is what I understand GPS to be?
  • Question

Will removal of Kinect help the XBox One compete with the PS4, or is it a bad move by Microsoft?

    Posted May 13, 2014 - 3:43 pm

I had thought that the Kinect was something Microsoft was making the core of the XBox One experience. Now they have announced that the XBox One will be available without Kinect. Is this a good move or a bad one?

How to connect Wii to VGA/DVI display?

    Posted May 6, 2014 - 3:14 am

I want to connect an original Wii (NOT Wii U) to an unused VGA monitor so I can use it in a guest bedroom at my house. How can I do it - the Wii doesn’t have HDMI output?
  • Question

Can I add an external hard drive to a PS4?

    Posted April 23, 2014 - 7:55 am

I’ve almost convinced myself to get a PS4, but I’m a little concerned about being limited to 500gb of internal storage in light of the size of games and increasing popularity of downloading “retail” titles. Can an external hard drive be added to a PS4 for additional storage?
  • Question

Will Netflix’s decision to increase subscription prices cost it customers?

    Posted April 21, 2014 - 4:37 pm

Netflix is planning to increase subscription prices by $1 to $2 a month according to Bloomberg Businessweek. Is this enough to cause the company to lose customers? People freaked out when they separated the DVD rental and streaming video business and it took them a few quarters to recover.
  • Question

How to become Google Glass explorer?

    Posted April 10, 2014 - 9:32 pm

I was told today that Google was opening up the explorer program (the oddly clubbish name for people allowed to buy Google Glass) to everyone. I have to admit, I’m intrigued. Despite the mixed reaction to Glass, I think it could eventually be an important product. I’m not sure I am ready to spend $1500 to find out….but I might be.

How to connect electric guitar to PC?

    Posted April 8, 2014 - 3:16 pm

What’s the best way to connect an electric guitar to record sessions on a PC? Once I get everything set up, I’m planning on using Reaper digital audio workstation software, which is Windows compatible software similar to GarageBand on Macs. Sound is more important that cost, but keep in mind I’m not a professional musician.
  • Question

What does Amazon’s Fire TV set-top box do that is different from existing products?

    Posted April 3, 2014 - 4:37 am

Amazon just announced its new set-top box called Fire TV, but it seems to me that there are plenty of established products already. Roku, Apple and, to an extent, Google all have streaming devices on the market. Does Fire TV do anything new, or does it do the same thing as all the other products, just with the Amazon name on it?
  • Question

Can someone really learn guitar from playing Rocksmith games?

    Posted March 31, 2014 - 7:11 pm

I’ve been looking at a music game called Rocksmith that's available for the PS3, X360 and PC. Remember those music games like guitar hero? Well, this is kind of like that except you use an actual guitar to play actual chords and notes instead of one of those little plastic toy “pretend” guitars.
  • Question

What are some good indie games for the PS3?

    Posted March 26, 2014 - 2:52 pm

I used to play a lot of video games back in high school and college, and now that I have a kid I’d like for them to experience that there is more to gaming than first person shooters, which is all he seems to play.
  • Question

Will Facebook’s purchase of Oculus damage the Oculus brand?

    Posted March 25, 2014 - 10:03 pm

I know, I know - how much of a “brand” does Oculus have at this stage. They only have the Rift VR headset in development, not one consumer unit has been sold, nor will it for a while. True, but with Oculus Rift, I have been planning to plunk down my hard earned and try it out. Traditional transaction.
  • Question

Does Sony’s Morpheus VR project hurt Oculus Rift’s chances of success?

    Posted March 19, 2014 - 4:49 pm

Sony just announced that they are going to make a virtual reality headset for the PS4, creatively called Project Morpheus. The Oculus Rift has been under development for quite a while now, and hopefully will be released sometime this year.
  • Question

Do PS4 owners need to purchase a PlayStation Network membership to use the system online?

    Posted March 17, 2014 - 9:36 pm

I was looking at both the PS4 and the XBox One, and it seems like the PS4 is the less expensive option, both initially ($400 vs. $500) and on a continuing basis because of the XBox One requirement to purchase a gold membership each year to use Netflix, Amazon Streaming Video, Hulu, play games online, etc.
  • Question

How to transfer money using iPhone?

    Posted March 13, 2014 - 5:55 pm

One of my kids is in college, and isn’t afraid to make a call to dad occasionally asking for a little extra money to make it through the month. She works part time and is a good student, so I don’t mind helping out. I’d like to make it as easy as possible when I do though; what is the easiest way to transfer money using an iPhone?
  • Question

How to get HBO Go to work with PS3?

    Posted March 5, 2014 - 7:37 pm

I have never had any difficulty getting any video on demand service to work with my PS3, but the new HBO Go application is a “no go”. When I contacted Sony they asked why my ISP was, and when I told them Comcast, Sony advised me to contact Comcast. Well, Comcast customer service has a terrible reputation for a reason…terrible customer service.
  • Question

Will Nintendo’s decision to shut down Wii servers affect Netflix and Hulu services on the system?

    Posted February 27, 2014 - 8:01 pm

My family’s Wii served a long and noble role as a gaming system for years, but now it is mostly used for streaming Netflix, Hulu and occasionally YouTube. Nintendo has announced it is shutting down online services for the Wii in a couple of months, so there will be no more Mario Kart Wii online matches, sadly.
