WSO2 debuts cloud platform for apps
The WSO2 Stratus open source platform-as-a-service offering deploys onto cloud infrastructure like Amazon's EC2
WSO2 is debuting on Tuesday an enterprise open source cloud platform, WSO2 Stratos, for application deployments.
Billed as a hosted platform-as-a-service offering, Stratos enables IT professionals to deploy applications and services on private or public clouds. Capabilities are featured for portal, enterprise service bus, and application server capabilities, WSO2 said. Identity management and governance are provided also.
[ WSO2 Stratos is part of the overall WSO2 Cloud platform, which also has featured SOA capabilities, as InfoWorld's Paul Krill reported last year. ]
Featuring multi-tenancy, Stratos installs onto existing cloud infrastructure such as Eucalyptus, Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud, or Amazon EC2 (Elastic Computing Cloud).
"At a time when IT developers can create a new application in one month, taking months to provision and deploy servers and systems no longer makes strategic or economic sense," said Dr. Sanjiva Weerawarana, WSO2 founder and CEO, in a statement released by the company. "WSO2 Stratos provides a complete middleware platform for delivering robust applications on private clouds, as well as migrating between and integrating with public clouds and on-premise systems -- and there's never cloud lock-in."
Key to Stratos is a cloud manager for configuring middleware services. Stratus lets enterprises optimize data center utilization, only paying for what is actually used, the company said. Stratos is built on WSO2 Carbon, the company's OSGI-compliant middleware. Carbon enables applications to be migrated on premise, to a private cloud, or to a public cloud. WSO2 Stratos is available Tuesday as an early adopter release for private clouds and as a demonstration version on private clouds.
WSO2 also is launching CloudStart, a $17,500 program that provides an engineering team onsite for a week to deploy WSO2 Stratos to either Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud or a customer's existing cloud infrastructure.
