Playstation Phone to be revealed in February?
Back in October Engadget leaked images that it claimed were of a new Playstation Phone coming out of Sony Ericsson. When disbelievers cried "Photoshop" Engadget took the unusual course of action of writing a second post insisting that their leaks were legit, and then Sony's Peter Dille talked all around the device, without actually confirming it, in a fireside chat with CNN.
Over the weekend it was Sony Ericsson's turn to feed the fires of this particular rumor. In an article in The Wall Street Journal, Sony Ericsson chief executive Bert Nordberg dropped a few choice quotes when asked if the device was real:
"There's a lot of smoke, and I tell you there must be a fire somewhere," Mr. Nordberg said during an interview. "Sony has an extremely strong offering in the gaming market, and that's very interesting."
Asked why Sony Ericsson hasn't already released a phone employing Sony's gaming resources, Mr. Nordberg said: "I haven't dug into that history, but the future might be brighter."
Nordberg went on to say that he wanted to make a lot of noise with a new product at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in February. He also said there were no great technological hurdles to overcome in order to produce a Playstation phone; the challenge is in getting the rights to content from game publishers and that he was "very glad that we work with a company like Sony, who actually knows how to do it."
Nordberg said that Sony Ericsson has built a strong position in the Android segment, and that Android would probably remain the dominant phone OS in the Sony Ericsson lineup for at least the next two years.
All of this falls nicely in line with the earlier leaks of an Android-based phone with a slider that reveals PSP-style gaming controls. Sounds like a done deal to me. What do you think? And what, if anything, does this mean for the PSP2? Will we have a Playstation Phone reveal in March followed by a PSP2 reveal at E3 in June?
