Developing for the Mac App Store
Leapfrog the learning curve with these how-to videos.
Being a Mac developer no longer requires you to think Steve Jobs is bigger than Elvis (and have the velvet portrait to prove it). You don't have to harbor that old grudge against Microsoft for ripping off Apple's UI. And you certainly don't have to be visibly gleeful that Apple is now outpacing Microsoft.
Of course, there's a learning curve involved and some very specific dos and don'ts when it comes to finally submitting your app to the Mac App Store.
As luck (or fate) would have it, Mac developers are a generous bunch -- and a number of them have even posted instructional videos on YouTube.
Here we've assembled a collection of some of the best how-to videos for newbies and pros alike. Check them out and be on your way to happy coding.
Developing in XCode
Getting familiar with XCode is a good place to start. (If you haven't done so already, download XCode from the Apple Developer site.)
This video has a non-novice showing you how to develop two simple Cocoa apps using XCode.
Writing the code
Putting together a project using XCode is not difficult. However, having someone show you the process in real time will help you understand what to expect when writing your code.
The following video is the second in a series demonstrating how to use XCode to add your Cocoa and Objective-C code. The big problem is the graininess of this presentation. If you listen closely, though, you should be able to follow along without much difficulty.
Creating a game
Moving on now. The real key to becomming a great app developer is coming up with a good idea. 1% inspiration and all that.
The following video series is very in-depth, but will show you tips and tricks for navigating XCode. And, hey...game!
How to upload your app, one take
This is a Lynda.com training video, and is most likely everything you will need to know to upload your apps to the Mac Store. The cost for this knowledge is apparently not free, but it is well produced and comprehensive.
How to upload your app, another take
Speaker "T-shirt" Booth shows you very clearly how to upload your game to the Mac App Store. Booth's series of videos is terrific if you're interested in designing and writing games. The games he creates are simple and fun, and I recommend giving them a look.
The following video is near the end of his series and will show you how to upload your app through Mac Desktop Publishing.
From start to finish
This series of videos from Tim Layton is really the best of the bunch. They're well-produced, easy to follow, and very in-depth. In this first video in the series, Layton shows how to create a new project, create the user interface, assign a unique icon for the program, and distribute the app to other users.
