HP updates high-end Presario with new Pentium 4s

Hewlett-Packard Co. (HP) released a new desktop PC this week in pursuit of the high-end consumer market with new technology from Intel Corp.

HP will offer Intel's new 3.2GHz Pentium 4 processor in its new Compaq Computer Corp. Presario 8000T, it said in a release Tuesday. This PC also comes with RAID (redundant array of independent disks) technology, which is normally seen on servers but is making its way into feature-packed PCs with the release of systems based on Intel's new 875 and 865 chipsets.

RAID technology is used in PCs or servers with two or more hard drives to save the same data to different drives. This creates an automatic backup system for data should one hard drive fail.

The 8000T is available for US$769 without the RAID technology, after a $50 mail-in rebate. A RAID configuration includes a 2.6GHz Pentium 4 processor with hyperthreading and a 800MHz front-side bus, 256M bytes of PC2700 (333MHz) DDR (double data rate) SDRAM (synchronous dynamic RAM), two 80G-byte hard drives, a 128M-byte Radeon 9200 graphics card from ATI Technologies Inc., and a CD-ROM drive for $999, after a $50 mail-in rebate.

It is available through HP's Web site, or at retail locations in the U.S.
