iPad Mini already obsolete? New model with retina display on the way.
OK so the iPhone 5 is out, the 4th generation iPad is out and the iPad Mini is out. Now we can relax and spend our time with our shiny new iProducts instead of fretting about rumors, right?
Already the Apple rumor mill is ramping up for the next iPad Mini! Seriously! The source is DoNews, but I don't read Chinese so I'm blaming Slashgear. That iPad Mini you just bought — the one that still smells of new electronics (I love that smell!) — will be obsolete soon. There's a new iPad Mini on the way and it has a retina display, you see.
I'm joking of course. I just find it ludicrous that I'm already talking about the next iPad. Your Mini will be fine for quite some time. Assuming we take the rumor at face value, the story is that AU Optronics, one of the companies who produce the 7.9" 1024x768 panels for the iPad Mini, plans to start mass producing 7.9" panels with a 2048 x 1536 resolution in the second half of 2013.
So expect the 2nd generation iPad Mini to hit next fall with a retina display. By that time your 1st gen iPad Mini will be about 6 months past its retirement date anyway, by Apple reckoning at least. (Zing!)
I'm not familiar with DoNews and so can't comment on how reliable they are, but it makes sense that Apple would want to move to a higher resolution display sooner rather than later. That said, if you were planning on getting yourself a first gen Mini for the holidays, don't change your plans based on this rather sketchy rumor.
